Martin Monel Strings on a Rainsong
I just put a set of Tony Rice Medium Monel strings on my Rainsong Jumbo.
Right off the bat, they sound nice! Besides the silver-gray color of the wound strings looks good with the shark inlays.... |

Similarly, I have put John Pearse pure nickel mediums on my Lucky 13 and they sound great.

hmm, I have a couple of sets of Pearse Nickels, and I think one set of Monels. Might have to give it a try...

I was using flatwounds on my Rainsong P12, just to mellow it out a bit. I like the Martin Monels better. They feel like regular strings, but still take a little of the edge off the carbon fiber tone.

Martin Monel Strings on a Rainsong
Ok guys it's been a few months. How do you like your JP nickel Monel retro strings now? I'm thinking of trying some on my shorty this week. So far I've only tried the Elixirs on mine.

I prefer the monels to the jp. The jp nickels seemed a bit thinner to me, though I thought they were decent. The monels seemed to be more full and a little warmer.
Not sure I've totally settled on the monels, but I've had them on for almost a month, they stay in tune well still, and I still like the tone.

Just revisited my Rainsong Jumbo with the Tony Rice medium monel strings, tuned down to Eb. Still sounds good to me!

I'm using Monel lights on my Shorty. Best strings I've used by far. Mellows it out a bit... I also like them on my wood guitars.

I just put a set of the Custom Lights on my P12 last night. Initial impression is good. The guitar is still bright but has good balance and clarity. These strings might not be as "warm" as the TI Plectrums they replaced (which had been on the guitar since mid-November). We'll see how they set over the next week. I am using the Custom Lights on my 522e (all mahogany) and like them on that guitar.

A question for you though- are these PBs or 80/20s? I have heard rave reviews about using Elixir polyweb PBs on the Shorty. I bought a set for mine but have yet to try them out.

As far as I recall they are the 80/20s. For sure it's whatever is recommended on the rainsong website (had Elixir part number there too) that's what I bought. Been a couple months.
My initial reaction was that I was hearing less acoustic jangly sound and more mellow low end with the Monels. The weird thing was I was realizing how used to the elixirs I had become over the last few years. I was creating a lot of finger noise in the Monels ooooops! I think I'll try the PBs next.

I do have a request. Play "New York's not my Home" all the way through. (On You Tube please) That's a great Croce song(as you know). I'm a Huge Croce guy, and you played the intro very well. Need to hear(and see) the rest. BTW; great comparison on the strings. The Shorty sounded very mature with both string sets. Thank you

Oh cool! A request! Ok. Um, vocals or no? Rainsong Shorty or ???
Wait I do have a version on YouTube http://youtu.be/NRc4zd7ZT1U If you want a version a little slower and more focused on the guitar with no vocals I could do that no prob!
