How to get Good Amp Sound in Garageband
Hi Everyone,
I've got a MacBook Pro, Garageband, a Focusrite 2i4, a Neumann TLM102 mic (which really isn't involved unless for vocals in this case), a Les Paul Standard amongst my other guitars. For some reason I can't dial in a solid sounding crunchy amp sound in the Garageband software itself. Would I need some sort of effects processor prior to sending the signal through to the Focusrite? I'm a newb when it comes to this stuff. Any suggestions on how to get a good electric guitar sound from Garageband? Thx. IG

Stick your 102 in front of a good amp in a good sounding room. I think all the simulation stuff is iffy at best.

I agree with Rudy4; this week my son has been experimenting with how to make his Strat sound best in GarageBand. The build-in amp simulators were at the bottom of his list; a mic'ed cab was best.

Yeah, what Rudy said!
I'm not familiar with GB, so not sure what it offers, but some amp simulation software: Line 6 PodFarm, Amplitube, Guitar Rig, BIAS. I used to use PodFarm all the time, but what was missing were the dynamics. Now I'll use PodFarm for post-processing my DI bass, and occasionally if I record an electric guitar with wet (miked amp) & dry (DI) tracks I might try some sounds out on the dry track and combine them with the wet track.

Thanks guys.. Grrrr, so I'll probably have to go out and buy a decent amp it seems. It's just that I've got limited space.
Does anyone happen to have any good small amp recommendations for this mic'ing situation? I've got a Schertler Jam 150 but I use that for my acoustic. I'm not sure how that would work (or not) with my Les Paul and maybe some pedal unit? Probably not very well I imagine. IG IG

Not saying it's the best amp in the world, but I've had very decent results using a tube Fender Champ 600. It takes pedals like a, well, a champ. I paid $150 for it a few years ago. I use an overdrive pedal for dirty tones and an old Big Muff Pi for shred type tones.
Season with a good old Shure 57. In my opinion, a very usable, albeit, basic, tube amp tone at bedroom volumes. |

I love my Silverface '69 Vibrochamp for recording. Small champ amps have been used in studios for years because they get the tone to the microphones at decent volume levels.
Here it is with my lapsteel... Here it is with my Fender Musicmaster guitar.... |

Nice recordings Rockabilly. I've been thinking and doing some research.. Have you guys heard of the Line 6 Helix? or Line 6 Helix LT? It's pretty expensive but seems to be the bees knees when it comes to both recording and live performance for electric (and maybe acoustic) guitar. Anyone have experience with this unit?

I mostly agree with posters here that you can't beat the sound of a real amp recorded with a real mic.
I'm using Logic Pro X and I'm using both the built-in guitar and pedal sims as well as those from the Waves GTR3 guitar modelling plugin: http://www.musicradar.com/reviews/gu...edition-156629 That is on offer for $49 on the Waves web site. I really like these sounds and can't stop playing electric guitar lately. In comparison I would say I prefer to use these guitar sounds over my Fender Mustang 1 amp, or my Zoom G3.
