Cheap little Martin I saw at Gruhn a couple years ago.
Just ran across these pics from a visit to Gruhn a couple of years ago. It was cheap enough, but then a really sweet Zager caught my eye...

I've never been to Gruhn's. Do they let people play that guitar? Or do you have to be special to get a shot or put down 50k?

The folks at Gruhn are really cool. I've always felt welcome anytime I've gone. I think for a guitar like that you would have to be a serious buyer to try it out, but I didn't ask. There were a bunch of old Gibsons, Martins, etc., hanging on the wall that I had full access to and I stuck to playing those. I even played a few in the $10-$15k range. It's definitely worth the trip.

The wife said "no". She said the Zager was too nice for the way I play.

Yeah...Mick's right...the folks at Gruhn are very cool. Especially George. I didn't play any '34-'41 PW Martin's but I did play a lot of great guitars. Two hours in that store is NOT long enough.

That D-45 - not a great year, You could screw a magnetic pick up into the top with a couple of tone and volume pots in the lower bout. How about a home crafted cutaway and a double pick guard?
I wonder what it actually sold for?

You should have grabbed a couple of 'em, I think they go for over $200,000 at most shops.

If I recall correctly that d45 was refinished. Sold I assume, a great no brained investment

My son and I stopped in at Gruhn's last spring. Michael at the front desk told us, "Feel free to pick up and play anything you want!" He pointed out a series of Martin sinker mahogany guitars that were custom-made out of a sinker log that George had purchased from South America. I played a couple of those in a 0000 shape that were on the floor - very nice sounding instruments.
As we were leaving, Michael told us that Vince Gill had been in a couple of days prior. He had Joe Walsh, Don Henley, and Timothy B. Schmidt with him. He ended up buying 6 of those sinker guitars for his Eagles bandmates. On the way out the door, he waited until the other guys made it outside, then he poked his head back in, winked, and said "Job security!" |
