As a classically trained guitarist with occasional back issues, I've tried tons of options.

Right now the most comfortable thing I've found is one of the cheapest. A piano bench made by Yamaha. It's surprisingly cushy and adjustable:

I used in the vid in my signature. Once I'm in the zone I don't even think about it and can go for an hour or so before I have to move around.

Sounds like mine, $15 on Craigs. I took the arms off and recovered it in black vynl....poor man's sound seat.

Chairs with arms drive me crazy when trying to play.

For me it's the couch or standing. Even worse are the folding stools we use in church. I HATE 'em. I wish I could use one of the upholstered stackable chairs that our church uses instead of pews.

I hate Soundseats. Pure gimmick IMO. I always feel like I'm going to fall off. They feel like a modified office chair with a barstool foot ring - two seating options that I cannot find comfort with. Somebody mentioned using a drummer's stool with a separate foot rest and I'd concur with that. Apart from the couch that combination is find to be the most comfortable.

I sit on a firm 2' x 2' ottoman.

It allows my legs to be higher than when I sit on a couch (meaning the guitar also sits a little higher). I can lean forward to dig in a little, or lean back a little (don't know why, but I do).

Folding metal chair from Target. About 15 bucks. The first guitar-related item without a popular brand name that I've purchased. (Left the hang tag---aka case candy---on it, however, for resale.)

For performing, usually stand or sit on a 30" stool from WalMart. At home? Whatever.

I gig regularly with the Kinsman stool. Very happy with it.

I usually sit on an office chair that you can raise or lower and has no arms. I'm not all that crazy about it. I tend to cross my legs to get the right positioning - which is not good.

Playing at my bud's, he has a classic barstool - metal legs padded top and the bar where you can rest your foot. Like this:

I liked it. Before I buy something like this - is there something people like better?

If you get a chance, try out one of these chairs. They are surprising comfortable, much more so than any other folding chair -

http://www.amazon.com/Flex-Event-Fol...+folding+chair

Flexible, high-impact polymer backrest and seat conform to your shape
Heat-treated powder coated frame, UV-stable for outdoor use
Continuous lumbar support
Waterfall seat front for enhanced leg comfort
Durably constructed; to support over 1,000 lbs.

Best of all, under $20.

Default Sound Seat

Sorry Crnazz and others. I'd read that Sound Seat had gone out of business and an internet search that I made did not turn up any results. Just shows once again that I am not the best internet searcher.

Aha...this is something quite dear to my heart...and since taking up guitar have spent considerable time working out THE most comfortable seat to sit on and my conclusion after extensive research (and buying some duds) on the matter....drum roll....is the Roc N Soc seat!

http://rocnsoc.com/new/product-line/lunar-series

This seat is primarily a drum seat, but it's the most comfortable seat ever! It's really well padded, supportive whilst having give so that you don't end up going numb after sitting a while. I've got the tractor style seat so that the circulation isnt cut off the back of my thighs and although I'm a petite lady - I've got the large tractor seat! (Got to allow for spread!)

Having a gas lift just adds to the all round comfort and obviously is height adjustable. In addition you can add a back support and a foot rest. I found after a while of playing rather than using the foot rest, I made a wooden step which I place infront of the stool - I find this is better for my stability, sitting square and for foot tapping.

I am serious...this is the BEST seat ever!

I find that in any regular-height chair/stool, I end up crouching forward over the guitar, which eventually gets my back hurting - and is not good for singing either.
A barstool with a back is a better choice - as long as there's a rail for the feet.

The seat that you purchase should NOT cost more than the guitar you play ...
