Default 814

In my opinion...and I've owned 6 Taylors...the 814 or the GSRS is the best.....all around guitar...and right now the GSRS is on sale...only difference is the GS's need medium strings to sound great..so, if you're a girly man and can't handle the mediums,,(and alot of people don't like mediums)..then go with the 814...if you want a second one....I'd go 514ce (mahog/cedar)...
the 814/514 combo is really all the guitars anyone would ever need!!!....
And, my opinion, I'd go acoustic and put in pick-ups myself....good luck..sorry you're hooked....it's worse than cocaine!!!!!

My favorite standard model is the 714ce (although I think the 814ce represents the best value, i just prefer cedar)

my fav limited of all time is the 2004 814ce L7 (followed closely by the 614ce L7)

Don't know if it's the best Taylor ever, but I pretty much love my 2004 914ce-L7 with Brazilian/Engleman and the "Cindy" inlay. It sure is pretty, and she just gets better sounding with age.

i have to say
414ce is the best

it sounds in between Mahogany and rosewood
which means its more balanced and it has some sonic overtone

after i played my 414ce and then i tried 614ce ..the 614 seem kinda weak
and then i tried 814ce... the 814ce wasnt louder than 414ce.. wasnt deeper..
and it lacked some brightness and treble comparing to the 414ce

even tho 400 series are cheaper
they are better!!! i never played a 900 series so i cant compare lol
but 900 series has better spruce top..so i guess 900 would win. ;o

On the other hand, if you want to go more high dollar, don't give it to Taylor because that is not what they do best. Taylor is not set up to give your guitar individual attention. For that, your money should be pointed to some smaller shop or custom builder. Bob Taylor, genius that he is and god bless him, will NOT be tap testing your sitka top and voicing it by shaving just a bit more off and resanding the braces.
Then look at a R. Taylor. They probably "tap test" all day long! :-)

I've owned 4 Taylors, and I've played a number of other Taylors. Each one has its own distinct sound.

I can't say which is best...enough for me to trade both my Taylors away, BUT I will say that the Taylor Big Baby is the most fun guitar I've ever had!

Good call! Although, my 1999 514 has been my favorite Taylor, and my main axe since new in 99.

My 07 Goodall AKCJ is a mighty fine Taylor as well.

And which model Goodall would that be.....(knowing full well that the "it's the builder, not the [fill in the blank]" line that comes next) - but I still have to ask. :-)

+1 for the 414ce.

I am nowhere near as experienced as slot of players on here - in age and ability

But...I tried out every Taylor available to me at local guitar shops and for the tone/price I decided in this. For me personally it's the best sounding and easiest playing guitar I have ever played!

"One man's trash is another man's treasure"

Debating what is 'the best' of anything is so subjective that is a rather pointless exercise IMHO.

But it is so great because it was relatively cheap! I got it used (less than a year old) and cut hundreds off the price.

Taylor has a great factory that can do amazing things that give good results in a massed, automated way. Taylor is thus a great "value" guitar.

On the other hand, if you want to go more high dollar, don't give it to Taylor because that is not what they do best. Taylor is not set up to give your guitar individual attention. I have played tap tested guitars that were quite disappointing and guitars that weren't that were aurally stunning. Every guitar maker has their own way of doing things with some techniques more efficacious than others but it is only the results that matter.

Late 90s 914c.
Not only the sound but looks.

I am so glad they are coming out with Cindy inlays this year.

my 314 is perfect for me.

id love a 714, but my situation wont allow me to drop 2600 on a guitar that i only play as a hobby. down the line, ill own a 714, or a 814. those are my favorite 2 models.
