Sigma DM-1ST
Hi
anybody have one of these, or know much about them? I am thinking about buying one I found at a good price, and was wondering if someone could tell me a bit about them, as I cannot find much info on the 'net. The headstock looks just like a Martin. thanks! |

I had one for about three days, then returned it. I'm a lefty, and bought it as a factory lefty, but I discovered it was braced for a right handed guitar (I hate when that happens). My recollection was that it sold for about 250. It was worth the price, but 250 bucks buys you a 250 dollar guitar, if you catch my drift. I recall that, tonally, it didn't have a whole lot of complexity or depth. Unless you're really strapped for cash, you could do better.

If you've played it, or at least heard it, you should be able to make up your mind. Sigma's with solid tops (like that one) usually play and sound great. However, they changed factories several times and the year of manufacture can make a difference just as different guitars sound differently. Let your ears guide you.

I know we are not really supposed to talk prices,
but I really need some advice. The one I am looking at for sale is $120 in very good condition. Is that a good deal? hard case is included I am told I have not seen the guitar yet, that is just the craigslist description.. |

If in good shape and tonal quality - that's an excellent price. And by excellent, I've seen them go for triple that.

I suggest you go and play it. Bring your pick and capo and play the daylights out of it. Then go to Guitar Center, Sam Ash or any local shop and see what you can get for $120.
Then go back and pay the guy for the Sigma. |

There would be no time to go to GC after playing it to A/B it with other guitars. The sellers says there is a line of people forming behind me that are interested in it.

I can help speed things up for you. Skip GC because there ain't nothing there you can get for a buck-twenty.

You can easily flip it for what you paid or perhaps a little more. Try before you buy. If it needs a refret or neck reset walk. Otherwise why not?

If you are refering to the Sigma guitars back when Martin owned them I had one. Well built guitars but I did not like the sound at all. Have owned several of the old Sigma's same deal. Never found one I like the sound of.
To me the Yamaha FG series guitars have a better sound. djh |

Did you pass on the Sigma?

Given the numbering of the model, I'm guessing it's one of the very recently reborn Sigmas, not the ones from the days when Martin owned them. They are still Martin designs though, Martin sold the brand with licence to sell them as such.
Still a good guitar for the money IMO. I don't have an ear for high end, but I find my Sigma well made and great sounding, and was a good price. That's really all the matters. Web info: http://www.sigma-guitars.com/index.php?id=240 |
