The Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix is amazing!!
My wife has been wanting to take this in for quite a while, but other things always seem to come up. What a world class facility!
http://captnjim.blogspot.com/2015/02/mims-word.html Yes, there are plenty of guitars - both Martin and Fender have large exhibits. There are instruments from all over the world. Not just string instruments (but there are an awesome array of those), but anything musical you could imagine... and many things that I had never imagined. The John Lennon Educational Bus was there for a two-day tour... a mobile audio and video production facility. Easily worth the price of admission, and it was free with the museum entrance fee. They offer a two-day pass... you could easily spend that amount of time and more. If you find yourself in the Phoenix area, this is nirvana for musicians! There are bunches of photos and more in the link above. Best wishes, Captain Jim |

Ditto that! We did MIM last year while visiting the in-laws in Phoenix. It was awesome, and you could easily spend two whole days there. One full day is barely enough. There is an outdoor Chihuly art glass garden too. It was funny to see the caretakers running around the garden dusting the glass sculptures. (Why don't they just wait until it rains? Oh, right, this is Arizona!)

I live in the Phoenix area and have been to the MIM twice just to look at the exhibits. It is an extremely interesting place to visit. I have also seen two concerts in their theater room. It's a rather intimate venue so you can enjoy the show without having to deal with unruly crowds.

Another BIG thumbs up for this place! I found out about it when I found a tourist flyer at the airport. I had never heard of it before.
Music and instruments from all over the world! I was amused that the one common instrument to almost all cultures was... ready for this?? BAGPIPES! If you go to Phoenix for anything make sure you head over to Scottsdale to see the museum. -r |

Found my pics!
Heres a few more pics for you to enjoy.
Near the entrance was an interesting display with a lot of guitars. Some more cool instruments. Martin guitars had a BIG display with a bunch of interesting items related to guitar making. The "automatic" music room was a LOT of fun with a bunch of very cool music boxes and music machines. One unique item was a bench for making roll music for player pianos. Always wondered how all those holes got on that paper! A funky double neck with Duane Eddy's name on it. And if course to prove my earlier post- "A World of Bagpipes." |
