Where does the D41 fit?
General opinion here seems to lean towards the D28 being ideal for use in a group with the D35 being favored for solo work or strumming. What would be the ideal application for a D41 ?

It's simply an HD-28 for those who like bling.
I prefer the traditional herringbone, myself, but others like their shiny stuff. But construction wise, it is a D-28 variation which means it is good for playing any and all kinds of music, including solo, duo, band, and anything else you want. |

Glad to help!
p.s. Almost dead center in between the list price of those two (the HD-28 & D-41) you will find the HD-28V, which has a better (IMO) interpretation of the historical nod started by the HD-28 trim-wise, and the additional structural feature of forward shifted bracing (the other two have the X in the standard position). Without getting into exotic woods and more expensive (ala Authentic) features, THAT is where I point people in the market for a good Martin to at least take a few strums on! So maybe I only saved you $1000... |

Love my MFG Custom HD-28V with Adi top and wider string spacing!

I won't add anything substantive to what kydave said, but will just note that one of the great things about Martin is that their website lists pretty much every spec for the models. You can literally go through the list and see all the differences and know what you're paying extra for.

Not wanting to hijack the thread but your comments spurred another similar question.
Where does the JC-40 fit in? My buddy has one he got back in the 90's and it sounds AMAZING.

And here all this time I thought the D-41 fit in between the D-35 and the D-45. Amazing what you can learn on the internet.

First off, I don't own a D28, D35, or D41 but I have played many different examples of each. For looks, I prefer the D28 but the D28 is no D41 when it comes to sound. They sound very different to my ears. When I was looking for a new guitar, I was after an HD28 or HD28V but every one that I tried was missing something, but the D41 had the sound I was after on every one that I tried. Even though I ended up with my 000, the sound of those D41s were still the best. I bought the 000 because it felt better and I love the sound...if it were all about tone, the D41 would have been in my home instead. It'd great to have so many wonderful guitars to choose from. To me the D41 was best but I could understand someone preferring a D28 or D35. They are different guitars.
I'd play them all; buy the one you like best that fits your budget. They are all fantastic guitars that own their own unique sound, look, and feel. Best of luck in your search. To answer the OP question, I'd use the D41 anywhere you would use a D35 or D28. It seemed to have a fuller but more focused tone than the D28 but not as bass heavy as the D35.

"Bling can never make up for lack of talent, but I always try anyway."
Not my words, but it's definitely me! Make mine a D-45. Bill |

Let me just say that this is one opinion that is not shared by many, particularly by those who have owned a D41. They are not the same guitar. Just because the construction and bracing scheme is the same does not mean they sound the same. I will not bore you with how they are different, but just suffice to say do not just take one man's opinion on that.
Also, I have not actually checked prices lately, but no WAY can there be an actual $2,000 difference between HD28 and D41. Maybe you are confusing MSRP with street price?
