I think I'm going to start answering the phone "Ahoy there!" Thanks frogstar.

Okay, just take a deep breath. Let me help guide you through this confusing conundrum. When you are confronted with these aforementioned scenarios the easiest method to extract yourself from this obviously unpleasant situation is to say, "hello" and then carry on with your business as usual.

Default That's unbelievable!

If I'm paying good money to eat in a restaurant, I expect to be greeted with nothing less than a gruff "whaddya want?" Any of this "hello" nonsense and I'll take my appetite and my money elsewhere.

Maybe the person you called was expecting someone else - not that that's an excuse, but I can't imagine why they would talk to you that way.

The hardest one, though, must have been your daughter. I can't imagine the disappointment you must feel as a parent to be greeted that way by your own flesh and blood. We do the best we can, but once they're grown they make their own choices, and it isn't always what we hoped for. Please know that none of us will judge you or think that it's in any way your fault.

I blame all of this on the media. Almost every news show begins with "Hello".

I can't believe you suckered me into this thread with that vague, little title. You'd best be ready because...

You say goodbye and I say hello

"Hello" seems innocent enough, but it's a gateway word.

More importantly, what was your response? Your response is what will get you labelled as a troglodyte, hip, couthe, cool, square, old fashioned, linguistically challenged etc., etc.
Very important here on AGF. (at least given the number of threads, number of posts and amount of serious discussion it seems to command)

What's wrong with a simple "g'day mate", or "g'day gorgeous"

There are times I've used, "Arrrrrrrgh, me hardies!"

Just to spice things up.
