STA in TUNE Gadget

I bought a couple of these gimicks a few years ago that straighten strings above the NUT . Many have declared GARBAGE , I always use them and can attest that they do seem to work to keep the guitar in tune . I think they were $20 when I Got , now $40 which is a little steep .

Also has anyone tried the small brass plate ( which can be easily HomeBrewed to protect string Ball from Chopping up the Bridge underneath ? Retails online for $40 but can be made in about an hour for $1 . IF ANYONE HAS USED ONE , did it change the GUITAR TONE THAT you noticed ??
