The 1978 Ford F series is the best looking pickup ever made. Says I.

It's too bad they don't make them like that anymore.

When I was hunting a truck a few years ago, I would salivate over
trucks like this on bringatrailer... It went for over $40K, would go for more now I guess... I ended up with this for $10K... About ten more thousand for new wheels, tires, control arms, steering rack, cv-joints, King suspension, a set of progressive leaf springs and various other refreshments and it is pretty OK now -Mike |

The best thing about old trucks is the size. They were normal, not the bloated oversized behemoths of today, designed to look like an 18-wheeler in your rearview mirror.

'78 is a nice looking truck for sure. I'll take my 2015 with the creature comforts and room for more friends & family.

There is a guy in my little town who drives a beautiful '90-something Toyota Tacoma. It is pristine, and is that pretty dark green color.
I ran into him in the parking lot of the hardware store, and said "Hey, I'd like to buy that truck if you ever decide to sell it." He said, "I'll put your name on the list."

I like pickups, but have never owned one. SUVs + utility trailer has better suited my needs over the years. I agree that they’ve long been WAY too big. Just crazy and crazy expensive. I’m into vintage vehicles, so if I was ever to buy a pickup, it would be a ‘55 - ‘57 Chevy 3100 step side with wrap rear window, something like this...

I have a 1992 Ranger and use it now and again. I keep it waxed and fairly clean and have had a handful of offers for it. The bucket seats are very comfortable. No power windows, the AC has not worked for years, but it has new tires, starts every time and does not complain when the bed is loaded up with heavy material.

The Supercab version was an especially nice looker.

For sentimental value there was the utterly beat up 1970 C20 and a later F250 that were my life during some really hard times. For your post, we did a lot of recent testing of newer ones and decided to keep renting when truly needed. At work we have fleet type light trucks and a loaded GM 3500. Fancy didn't make a difference. It's not like I don't know them, and I never enjoy using them if I don't have to. My hangup probably comes from my background. All sizes of trucks were tools to not be poor, and decades later a huge percentage of them are no longer work vehicles. Why didn't they impress the girls back then like they do now LOL? My real dream Ford pickup would be a 1930 or '31 Model A version.

The old ones can’t SAFELY pull a load like the bloated, oversized behemoths of today. Yes, they can pull a heavy load, but should they be pulling a heavy load. I see people put loads behind their truck that is WAY beyond what they should be pulling.

I've owned 4 trucks over the years, and as a homeowner, found them to be quite useful. The newer 2 row 4-door trucks seem much more useful as a tool and a way to move a family around, but to me a 2-door pickup is much more aesthetically pleasing to look at. Most important (at least to me) is to have the right amount of lift and the right size wheel/tire combination to create a great looking truck.

My favorite was a 1984 F250 4x4 with a 351 Windsor, four speed stick with hi/lo. Big gnarly tires, that was a fun ride in the winters. Darned ugly though, had dents in almost every panel.
