Let's go back to February, 1972:

His technique doesn't even change that much when he goes to electric on this one.

You can absolutely strum an electric guitar. Like someone else said, a nice fender, some reverb and you're good.

A great electric strummer to my ears has always been Todd of Big head Todd and the Monsters. Early on, he was super clean with a Strat and tube amp cranked.

here's a nice example: https://youtu.be/zw_A-5A6rwA

Obviously all two pickup guitars allow that wider string sensing, but the combination of two naturally different sounding single coil pickups in the classic Tele add additional dimension to the clean strumming sound.
That's for that info! I didn't think about why both pickups would sound better, but noticed that was so with my '93 LP Studio w/490s (7.5k). Either pickup alone is . . . uninspiring, but together they sound terrific, especially when the volume and tone knobs are nuanced to influence the blend. It's as if that guitar was designed to use both pickups (though I know that's not the case). I don't notice the "perfect" blending as much with other HB guitars in my cabinet, but I do on the hotter single coils.
