On the other hand, I find that the workmanship in the joints of bindings, purflings and end graft is phenomenal.
Agreed! All those years of woodworking certainly shows through his work

LOL, I compliment a woman at a party, but I don't assume she made the dress or the jewelry or makeup (although she could have)! I do build guitars (though I took a 9 month hiatus) so I understand a little bit how wood works.

As to the wood, as beautiful as the one up there made it, he or she gave the ability to the loggers to fell it without damage (to both log and environment, as it is these days,) the sawyer who knew exactly how to cut said log to reveal said beautiful pattern, the resawer with the skills to get those slices from the boards, the lutherie supplier to provide it to the builder, and the builder whose eye was caught by a particular piece of wood and though. "Man, that would make a beautiful guitar."

Of course the quality of detail and workmanship are top-class, but I believe at this level in the custom shop section, this is and should be expected! I hope one day to achieve somewhere near that level, but by then, the bar would have been raised again. It is fun, however, playing catch-up...

Thanks guys! So I've just received it a couple of days ago (photos to follow) and I have to say I was VERY surprised by it. A more in depth review will follow, as well as a video, but for now, it's a pretty incredible guitar! Not to mention at a pretty good price too. Would highly recommend those looking for a great instrument that won't break the bank, to drop John Datlen an e-mail

John, you've did it again! Been very impressed by all the guitars of yours I've had the privilege of playing someone is going to be a happy owner of this Datlen.
