All These Years - Sawyer Brown cover
Well, for better or worse, here is the entire song that I used for my trial demo. It's an old song by Sawyer Brown. The subject of the lyrics is sad, and not usually my cup of tea, but the melody of the song is so well done that I decided to give it a whirl.
Please offer any suggestions that you may have, folks. Thanks for listening. I used my J45 standard for this recording. https://vimeo.com/228820557 Roger |

Well done! - Glenn

Good job Roger. You play well and sing even better.
Great choice of songs, that song has always slayed me. What a song. You asked for suggestions, and I will oblige in the spirit of helping. I think you are playing Am and then Em? Try this -- play Am but then not a full Em. I don't think the Em is a full Em. Try it with only the 4th string fretted at the second fret. Whatever chord that is. I have seen Mac Macanally play this song, and he actually plays those two chords up at the 5th fret but what I suggested sounds great. Of course, you can play it any way you like, I am just suggesting what I have seen. Recording is a humongous undertaking, isn't it. It is maddening to get the right sound and then the right effects and mix. Drives me nuts. Again, way to go, you're good, keep at it.

Hi Bill. Thanks so much for the feedback, I appreciate it.
I have used the fifth fret configuration for those chords, but being a bit nervous recording I wimped out and did the cowboy-chord version. However, I love your recommendation! It does sound very cool. Consider me converted. Thanks for the specific suggestion. Roger |

Roger,
I love this song. You do a very good version of it. The way you sing and play makes it sound more like a classic folk song than the 90s country pop that was on the radio. Nice.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for taking a listen to the song. I'm glad you liked it. Yes, my style is rooted in the folk genre, I guess. Hard to break old habits. I really liked Sawyer Brown's version, all their stuff really. Their lead singer (Mark) had a wonderful voice, I thought. Thanks again, Roger |

Hi Roger,
After listening to your rendition a few times, I looked up the Sawyer Brown version on YouTube to find out what their version sounded like. First off, as I noted earlier, you did a fine job on this! But Second, I now have this song really stuck in my head now. What a great song, sad as it is! - Glenn

It is really a great song. In the event anyone wants to learn it quick, here's a lesson that I posted about 6 years ago. You will need a PC to see the chords posted in the top left corner of the screen. (doesn't show up on mobile devices for some reasons)

Great job. I saw your test version and like others, had never heard it before. I always appreciate being exposed to great songs that aren't part of every standard set list.
Liked this one enough to learn it. |
