Default European Luthiers, who's out there making fine guitars?

The thread on the finest luthiers in the Northwest of America (and i guess Canada as well) was pretty interesting with more post's being made, so as a European i'd be very interested to hear of the finest European luthiers. From what i know there was a good showing of French luthiers at Montreal but don't really know much about them.

George Lowden comes to mind immediately. McIlroy too. Fydle, Furch and Lakewood... But these guys, although superb, have somewhat of a "factory production" facilities. I am sure there is a bunch is individual luthiers too. I would be interested to know them better myself! :-)))

In my search for luthiers in the UK - Stefan Sobell came to the top of the tree as highly recommended. Based in Hexham 20 miles from Newcastle he has a HUGE selection of Brazilian Rosewood. Prices start at @£8k and 14/18 months build.

A very long list of Spanish builders.
A long list of Sel/Mac style makers.
A modest list of French makers.
A modest list of German makers.
Some Dutch and Belgian builders

Or was your question Euro makers of American style steel string guitars ?

Two of the best are Rudie Blazer & Willi Henkes (Blazer & Henkes) in Tuebingen, Germany. Great guitars made by some great guys! I have a 000-45 and an OM-42 from them... remarkable instruments!

Lukas Brunner in Switzerland is known for his innovative travel guitars with replaceable necks but also makes outstanding custom hand made guitars. http://brunner-guitars.com/

There are some excellent builders in sweden: Rasmussen, Sandén, Sundström. I played some guitars by the first two and they hold up to anything out there.

Don't know about the others' facilities, but I've been to Dermot's workshop, and certainly wouldn't describe his operation as "factory production".

Very small workshop. Very much hand-built.

Well, I was on the hurry and perhaps did not use a good choice of words. What I meant to say that places like Lowden or even McIlroy are kind of shops that make a few hundred instruments per year or more. Although, on the end their guitars are still very much hand made, different people are responsible for different parts of construction.
My references to individual luthiers was about guys who work alone or with one or two helpers, and make perhaps 20 to 50 guitar per year.

P.S. I don't know much about McIlroy production level. I was under impression that he has a kind of shop that produces a few hundred instruments per year. My impression was based on availability of his new and used instruments. I may be wrong in the respect that he is in fact one of those individual luthiers with smaller production.

Without a doubt Brook are one of the finest small scale workshops. Superb craftmanship and sound, for not a lot of money (comparitively speaking of couorse!)

Other single luthiers worth a mention:

Andy Manson
Gary Nava
Dave White
David Oddy
Jonny Kinkade

Ah yes, forgot about Taran. PLayed one at Ivor Mairants a while ago, and very nice it was too (even with dead strings!) I was looking forward to a road trip he was doing on the acoustic magazine forum, but it seems to have been on long term hold for quite while now whilst a certain Mr Simpson had extended custody of it !
