Default The Ballad of Annie Moore

Annie Moore was the first migrant to be processed through the Ellis Island centre in 1892. It is now estimated that a third of all US citizens can — in some way — trace their ancestry back in part to one of the Ellis Island migrants.

Those migrants came to not only build new lives but a new country. Annie came from Cork in the South West of Ireland but others, of course, from all over the world.

Very well done, Andy! My ancesters on both sides of my family and both sides of my wife's family all came across Ellis Island, some of them not much later than 1892.

Thanks for that!

A fascinating period of history. Thanks Glenn. Where did your relatives come from?

Hi Andy,

My mother's family, both sides, came from Ireland. So I am half Irish. My father's family is a mixture of German and Austrian except for his mother, whose heritage was English. So I am a real blend, like so many Americans.

My wife's father came from Polish roots and her mother's family was English and Scottish. So our children are even more of a blend of ethnic backgrounds. My wife's middle name was Harrison, from the name of the US president (William Henry Harrison) because he was part of her family tree on her mother's side, so some parts of my wife's family were in America much earlier than Ellis Island. But most of my family came through Ellis Island.

hi Andy,

I must say that I love all the diversity in the US and in Canada, too. All of North America is one huge melting pot.

Take care and enjoy the holidays; try to ignore any idiots if you can.
