Default NGD - delayed by customs!

My first custom build by Canadian luthier Steve Denvir was supposed to arrive Friday via Fedex. But I just got an email from Fedex stating that it's delayed by customs. Apparently the local Fedex office misled Steve about what was required. And now I have to fill out some form for customs but Fedex has no idea what that form is! Waiting on them to get me more information.

What a bummer! I was looking forward to playing this over the Thanksgiving weekend and now next week will be the earliest I get it.

Default no surprise

The rules about products and borders are so convoluted and so changing that it is no surprise that a FedEx guy got it wrong. Sometimes the border people do too. And the consumer and the shipper end up on the short end of the stick.

At one point I thought about a build from Steve (great guy - I am sure you will love it) and for a variety of reasons, did not follow through. If I had, my plan was to drive up there and pick it up by hand. He is close enough that I could go and return home in a very long day. That way, 1) I do not pay for shipping. 2) I can test drive it there at his shop. If there is a problem at the border, 3) I might be able to sweet talk them and if that failed, 4) try another crossing. My experience with Canadian crossings is that the Canadians are fine; it's probably the US guys who will create any hassles.

The new CITES regs which went into effect last January are causing a whole lot of confusion and will continue to do so until sorted out. Too many acronyms, agencies and forms.

What kind of woods are we discussing here? If it's this new Rosewood stuff that was implemented at the beginning of this year you think they'd have a clue by now. I have 2 coming from Sweden in the next few months and am pretty on edge about it. The builder says it won't be a problem, but I need them in my hands!

Best of luck to you and let us know how it shakes out.

Mark

That sucks. Here's to getting the right paperwork done.

Aside from that, congrats on the build.

Edit: I just checked out Denvir's website. I'll be looking forward to your review, Paul.
