In the samples shown, I think the ABW looks the best with the fret board, the BRW was really light....who knows following the burst though.

I like them both, though I would guess the ABW weighs a bit more than the BRW; maybe you want to discuss the tonal implications with your builder....

Aesthetically, I agree Tom.... John has a myriad of BRW bridge blanks many of which are darker. Those were merely some that he had made that he laid on the top as examples.

Yes Louie, we are discussing bridge weight and damping and how it might affect the sound of the guitar. BRW is lighter with low damping, Ebony is heavier with high damping and ABW is heaviest and has low damping.

Always an anxious time during any build incorporating a burst (the waiting to see how it came out). The pore filler is on, the top has been sealed and the rosette, purfling and binding has been masked (1/16” tape, yikes!). John is waiting for a better weather window to spray the burst. I should see something soon...

Default Sunburst

One of the benefits of being an experienced archtop luthier who does their own finishing is mastery of creating a sunburst. After sealing the top, the rosette, binding and purflings required masking before the sunburst dyes could be applied. Some of the rings in the rosette were only 1/16” wide!

John created a mixture of hues to tie into the color of the East Indian Rosewood rims and to visually contrast against the abalone purflings/rosette and birdseye maple binding. Here is the sunburst, pre-nitro. It will continue to slightly darken with the application of the nitrocellulose lacquer. I think that it visually ties into brown and red hues of the rosewood and successfully sets off the abalone and maple to boot.

Thanks Nemoman... Requesting a burst on a custom commission can be a bit of rolling dice. I did not request a specific burst based on an example photo, but I asked him to harmonize with the body wood and visually set off the shell and maple features. I think that he did a superlative job...

I concur that John did a great job...(Thanks)

I am looking forward to seeing it next once John applies the nitrocellulose lacquer. The birdsye maple should “pop” a bit and the colors in the rosewood should emerge once the nitro is on. We can then go back to evaluating Brazilian Rosewood, Gaboon Ebony and African Blackwood bridge blanks based on weight and in the context of the burst...::

John has finished spraying on his nitrocellulose lacquer finish on the guitar. It finally warmed up enough for him to finish spraying. We now begin a 4-week wait until early February to allow it to adequately dry before buffing it.

To match the Gaboon Ebony fingerboard, peghead veneers and tuner buttons, he will use an Ebony belly bridge that looks similar to the African Blackwood one shown in this image, but it will be >5 grams lighter. John also makes his pickguards using hardwoods (impregnated with cyanoacrylate) instead of plastic. He will make a matching Ebony pickguard for this guitar.

Absolutely gorgeous guitar! But then again, I wouldn't expect anything less than perfection from John. A friend of mine plays one of his archtops and the guitar is just sublime.
