I have removed my original post for two reasons: a) the info was told to me in confidence and I should not have written about it and b) because I should have known someone would challenge me on it and without supporting proof, it is simply gossip and libelous.

As for drplayer's comments; I'm going to be gracious about it and walk away.

I think Mayer is just a little too much for my taste. He is a great player... no question. I'm not a fan of his lyrics, and I generally don't care for the "hey look at me" vibe I get from him. I know maybe it's part of the confidence that makes him successful, but it just rubs me the wrong way.. about me really and not about him.

Thank you. I deleted mine as well...should have been more tactful.

I find his guitar playing to be no more impressive than dozens of better blues electric guitarists. There are pop stars/singers that just do that well, but Mayer (and the ilk of Mraz et al) are just too bland for me.

Prince. Now that's another story (on the 30th anniversary of the release of Purple Rain).

For those following this thread, the concert film "John Mayer: Where the Light Is" (filmed in 2007) is currently on the Palladia TV network.

It's opened with some pretty impression work by Mayer performing a solo version of one of his songs while playing his Martin OM. Nice.

In particular, I figure those on both extremes of this discussion might want to watch this.

Regardless of what any of us say on here John Mayer and other celebrities like Celine Dion, and Barry Manilow that some love to hate are laughing all the way to the bank.
First time I heard Adele on the radio I thought...eww, she won't last long. Ha! My not buying her music really hurt her career. If we all liked the same thing there would only need to be one guitar, one type of art, one house plan, one style shirt, one color, etc.

My big beef is that he's kind of a man slut, and with his own preoccupation with women, his once decent guitar centric music has taken a real slide towards the smarmy.

He says for fathers to be good to their daughters and also for mothers to be good to their daughters too. Sounds like we could use more songwriters like him.

I could care less about his personal life, but I don't think I will; I'll probably keep caring the same about it as I always have....possibly a little more.
