Default Mahogany Question

Does the wood looks like Swietenia macrophylla or Swietenia humilis? As I have no extra information about this piece except it comes from Southern America, and I was told it is mahogany.

Just as an educated guess I would say the bEing that both are considered "Genuine" Mahogany" I would doubt you would be able to tell the difference by just looking at the boards.

You lost me there, but I've only had one cup of coffee.

Anything in the Swietenia genus is considered "genuine mahogany" but possibly that was not your point and I'm just slow. Going for more coffee now....

I believe you are correct, based on the chart. According to the chart, S. macrophylla, S. humilis, and S. mahogani are all considered "Genuine Mahogany".

That is a very cool chart. Looking at it, I was surprised to see that the Khaya genus of tonewoods is considered closer to "Genuine" than either Sipo or Sapele. Up till now, I had thought the opposite.

Ahh no you're right - I was answering two different mahogany questions in two different threads at the same time and got mixed up. The other was equating sapele to mahogany.

When I did see the picture when you first posted it did resemble a "mahogany type wood" but that's the best I can do.

They used to call it Honduras Mahogany. I understand, of course, that this is not the Latin or scientific term for it.
