Default Three worst mistakes guitar players make

Mine are:
1. Pickng up the guitar in the first place,
2. Thinking I could be as good as Tommy Emmanual,
3. Still trying to prove it...

What're yours ?

1. Striving to be a guitar player instead of a musician
2. Liking the guitar more than the music
3. Making guitar playing who you are instead of something you do.

In my experience,

1. Comparing themselves to other players.
2. Not listening.
3. Not listening.

Being too stubborn early on to realise the benefits of working with a metronome.

1. believing knowledge will stifle creativity
2. Tabs over ears.
3. assuming they "can't."

  1. Failure to learn and master scales
  2. Allowing my catalog of tunes to get old
  3. Too little time spent practicing

1. Buying a 50$ cheapy for their child "To make sure that they really want to play"
2. Thinking that faster is better
3. Thinking that sheet music is for "classical musicians only"

You are sooo right on that one. I've started using a metronome recently and my playing has improved tremendously.

My three are:
1) Practicing the same thing over and over again, and not branching out.
2) Talking about the guitar more than playing it. Like on discussion boards.
3) Not setting practice goals. (i.e. what do I want to master today.. what do I want to get out of this time I'm spending (besides enjoyment of course).

Sorry, one more: 4) Thinking that faster is better.

Good thread.

1. Mastering only the first half of a tough piece.
2. Forgetting that my right hand is the one that makes the guitar sound musical.
3. Thinking that noodling is the same as focused practice.
4. Letting the music theory part slide.

1) Not playing with others.
2) Thinking too much while playing instead of letting your inner muscian shine through. Stifling your ability to become an intuitive player by forcing the music. (Hope this makes sense?)
