Opened up my case and found this...
Two hairline cracks coming from the nut area. ... I don't recall manhandling it in its case or banging it against anything.

I see this a lot during shipping. There are four contributing factors:
1) The strings are loose. 2) There is little or no support behind the peghead. This may include no neck cradle in the case near the nut. 3) Heavy enclosed tuners. 4) The guitar case is standing up, and falls flat on the bottom side. The impact creates a whiplash effect, separating the neck from the fingerboard. This is a simple repair, and unlike a peghead crack extending above the nut, the string tension will tend to hold it closed. |

Hard to tell for sure by the photos but it looks like the neck was cracked and repaired to me. Seems like the line runs around the bottom of the neck or my glasses need to be replaced. Did you buy it new or used?

I got it new. It spends its time in its case, hung on the wall or being played.

This is what happened to one of my guitars when I gate checked it and Delta airlines got it mixed in with the regular baggage and it went through their baggage tumbler - it got neck whipped. I took it to the luthier who made it and she fixed it. Mine, under string tension, had tiny gaps between the neck and the fret board where it joins the peg head. In my case, released the pressure and the gaps disappear. She shot some glue in there and then re-finished the neck. Yours does not look as serious as mine and mine was a pretty straight forward fix.
It is hard to tell if the cracks are in the lacquer or in the wood. You might have it looked at by a reputable repair person in your area or take it back to where you purchased it. Good luck. Jayne |
