Default Dear Ex-Wife [Songwriting Help]

I was just goofing around with a new song idea and recorded a scratch run-through. It's intended to be played live in a small setting, like a get together with friends. So I don't think it translates well to a recording. The intro will be impromptu to each time I play it so it fits the context better than it does here. When I have played it, I snuck it in as part of the conversation. Afterwords, it occurred to a friend of mine that it was actually a performance, not a conversation. That's exactly what I was intending.

Anyway, I'd love to here suggestions.

How about

Dear extra-wife, on one thing I was wrong
I thought you weren't worth anything
But now I have this song

A little less harsh, but maybe that steals the punch line you want

Integrating spoken-word storytelling and songwriting seamlessly is an artform in itself. In my experience performers like Guy Clark, Verlon Thompson and Roy Bookbinder come to mind as masters of the form. You've done a really nice job of crafting that kind of mixed art performance. If it works for me in the rather anonymous and sterile universe of an isolated recording I'll bet it'll be a real crowd pleaser in front of a live audience. Nice delivery of a good concept!

Maybe, too, add another nice thing about your wife--who likely is in the audience. How about:

She's sweet and witty, smart and pretty
And we're growing every day

Or something...

Thanks for all the suggestions! I played this at an open mic and recorded it as well. Its very helpful for listening to what works, what didn't work. I'll keep working on it!
