My first thought was telecaster too, but since that's what everyone else has posted I'll say a Les Paul goldtop with P90's, or an Epi Casino.

My current fave for the purposes laid out by the initial post is a 72 Telecaster Re-issue (MIM) Semi-Hollow, very versatile, GREAT cleans.

Heres a tune which I am playing it on :

Not to be too obtuse but it depends on what you are doing. Are you out front or in the mix? I tend to like 335 or similar ilk when in the mix because it is more mid rangey even when buckers are in split mode. I like Single coils when out front as they tame easier and tend not to overpower the accompaniment.

I'm playing in a trio. Acoustic guitar, Fender bass and me.

I use my '02 PRS Custom 22.

It has Dragon II pickups which I'll likely replace someday soon.

But it sounds very good for strumming and finger picking in a pseudo-acoustic style.

I really love my PRS Santana SE with mojotone levelhead pickups. Dial those back 2 digits and sound like a sparkly PAF...roll up for a cool boost...all passive.
