If he wants to buy it, let him. We fall in and out of love with our guitars all the time. At least I do. For example, I played acoustics for years and years. Then I started playing bass in bands and a little electric guitar. So I basically didn't touch an acoustic for years. Now I'm "retired" from the bar scene and I am turning back to acoustics. Now my electrics are virtually untouched.
As for buying new, Musicians Friend says it has dropped the price on the acoustic-only version. Plus you can ask for a discount at MF and at some other sites. Plus again if you use a cashback service like Mr. Rebates you can save more ... eventually. Mr. Rebates offers 5 percent cash back and eBates offers, I think, 4 percent at last viewing. As for used, I agree there won't be a substantial savings sin most cases. Then add in shipping, insurance, taxes in some cases and there won't be much of a savings. However, you may luck out and find another listing locally or at some other site so you could save more. (I'm not affiliated with any of these companies.)

In my area, the used market for the GS mini is pretty tough. Like Ted said, you don't save much.

Here is your ticket to guitar freedom:
Sell that old house. It's a money pit. Move to a tax friendly state. More money for guitars.

My job is here, my wife's job is here, my kids are here, my son loves his high school. Everyone I know is here, family, friends. If I sell my house, I still will need to fix it up first, if I do that, might as well stay here, as the newer house prices in my area have skyrocketed over the last decade.
