Default NGD: Martin JPCA4

Hey all,

It's been forever since I've joined and posted anything. Yesterday I had a NGD and bought a Martin JPCA4 - and I love it! The two other guitars I was testing were the Martin GPCPA4 and the Gibson Songwriter Deluxe Studio EC.

I was VERY tempted by the SDS, but, in the end I opted for the Martin as it seems to sound just as deep as the Gibson, yet more open with a wider EQ, tone-wise.

The Gibson was nothing short of awesome, and sounded very middy with great lows with a more focused EQ. One thing that I did notice was that the SDS could get notable louder than the Martin when pushed.

Plugged in, both sounded great with the Martin's electronics being a little more simplified.

I notice that there's not a lot of info out on the WWW regarding the JPCA4. After using the search function, I couldn't find much regarding this particular model. Also, Martin doesn't have it listed on their website. Is the JCPA4 similar to the OMPCA4? Anyone with experience or info please chime in and thanks!

Congrats on the new guitar. From what I've read, the JCPA4 appears to be a Guitar Center exclusive. It's a hybrid of sorts, larger than the OMCPA4, having the 0000 (M) dimensions except with a dreadnought's depth. They share the same bracing pattern and F1 Analog pickup.

Thank you both for your replies! Thank you Jeremy for the references.

I am loving this model, but do sometimes second guess my decision and am probably going to try out the SDS again sometime this week. Fortunately, I got it at GC and have the return policy if I decide to exchange the guitars.

Either way, I'm sure I'll be happy!!!

bonedish,

I emailed Martin my serial # asking about my JCPA4 and which model it is based on and I was told it's based on a Martin DCPA4 Rosewood
The custom features are:
J-14 fret body
Grained Ivoroid binding

The offset dots are really not a custom feature but the DCPA4 Rosewood does not have them but the mahogany DCPA4 does have the offset dots.

Did you end up keeping yours ?

Yes! It is a GREAT guitar. I tested the Gibson SWD again and confirmed that I got my decision correct the first time. Not that the SWD is bad, it's an awesome guitar - but the JCPA4 was clearer in the lows and has a wider EQ spread (IMHO) in comparison. The JCPA4 lows are clear, deep and piano-like!

banditcosmo - thank you so much for the info!!! That's great!

I am most definitely keeping mine. I LOVE the fact that it's a hidden gem amongst other Martin guitars. It places owners of this particular model in an exclusive club of sorts! To me, it's everything the GPCPA4 is and MORE!

As for the wolf tone issue, it appears to have stopped doing it!
I've googled and read multiple forums posts and other site's info regarding this. Being that this is a new guitar, I've read that my guitar should "grow out of it", which it already seems to have done. Again, I'm not sure how much it was a true wolf tone issue, but keeping my JCPA4 in it's case with humidity packs seems to have cured the issue for now.

Thank you all for all of your help and responses!
