This is also what I do. That, and always have some extra new .010's, .012's around too.

These are a good investment for both electric and acoustic guitars:

Hi pz

I used to high-string guitars for studio backing, and just bought singles (12 in a tube of each weight for $2.19 tube) from Musician's Friend.

I ordered their Rogue house brand bulk strings. Their Plain strings (P series) ran from .008 - .022 weights for that price.

And their thin wound (B series) were $6-$8 for 12 strings. And the bottom two strings (5 & 6) were more in that $8 for 12 range.

They also had a Nickel (W series) for electrics.

I just made my self a 1.5" PVC pipe holder (40" long) that I store them in. Still have a bunch in the studio. Used some last year and they were still fine.

In fact I buy plain .013 all the time to replace the top string on my light gauge sets for my 6 string acoustic guitars. I've been using them for at least 4 years off the last batch I ordered and they are as lively as ever (we live in a very dry climate).

LOL! No my friend it is usually the high E..or B string that breaks. I think you need an .018 gauge string and you only need one!

Yes.. The strings are available. I just ordered some from Just Strings to make my custom set for the 12 string. What I have found is that GHS has a good selection of individual strings available from Just Strings. (more so than Daddario). Add to that the fact that they are the only main supplier that I have found that has an .018 wound string available... that I will use in that A octave position... Sounds better than the plain steel strings that come with normal sets. GHS makes that gauge available in a few of their alloys ( at least PB and 80/20).

And here I thought I was the only one the hung on to old strings. Silly me.

The high G on my '81 Alvarez doesn't always last until it's time for a new set. I learned that early on and started keeping the old one around.

Well, all the above still applies - just visit your local store, or buy online - all you need to do is to know the gauge (it'll be on the package).

I've replaced strings for my 12er with strings from an electric 6 string set.

Indeed...every 12 string player should keep a pack of these in their case. It could get you out of a heap of trouble in the future.
