Default Formula 1 Season Underway

Just watched my recording of the qualifying for the Australian GP tomorrow and it seem to bode well for the season.

The cars are very different. Lower, wider, with huge fat tires. Very fast.

Best news is that Ferrari appears to back in a big way and have closed the gap to Mercedes. Hamilton got the pole but Vettel was 2nd and within a few 10ths of pole time. Bottas did well for his premier with Mercedes and hung in with Hamilton. He and Raikonnen have the 2nd row,

Notable also was the USA's Haas team, albeit with an Italian engine and a French driver, made it to Q3 and qualified 7th which is pretty good for a 2nd year team.

Looking forward to the race tomorrow as I think Vettel is a better race driver and that may finally give some real head to head competition rather than the time trials we've had past few seasons.

For some reason my recording cut out a few minutes after Ricciardo's crash. I don't know the final results and want to see it on the track. Looks like the next airing is 10:30 tonight.

I'm bummed.

The cars look great and sound better than last year. I'm looking forward to the season. I've been a Hamilton fan since his debut (and before) but I hope Ferrari and Red Bull can take the fight to them.

Did note a few teams went "full ugly" on their paint schemes. McLaren went with a hideous orange/black combo. Why they don't go back to the white/orange of their heyday I don't know.

Force India made an unfortunate shift to pink. I did like that the two Red Bull teams have different paint schemes this year.

I'm pretty sure Grosjean in the Haas qualified 6th.

The new cars are the best looking F1 cars in over a decade, IMHO. Once again they look like real race cars.

I plan on watching the race live tonight.

BTW, young American Santino Ferrucci, who raced with us in F2000 in 2013, is Haas' development driver. He's currently driving for DAMS in GP3.

Sebastian split the Mercedes - how cool is that?!?

I may stay or get up and watch the race live. I DVR all the races but prefer watching them live.

I hope Bottas can continue in 2017 where Rosberg left in 2016.

No, I think he's amazing and a super nice guy but the early signs are Mercedes will continue having the best cars in 2017 with Ferrari a much closer second and Red Bull a likely third.

I can't decide which I prefer the most, Ricciardo winning or Hamilton being beaten.

Interestingly, UK magazine 'Autosport' voted Daniel Ricciardo best driver in the world for 2016 above F1 World Champion Rosberg in 4th and their poster boy Lewis Hamilton 2nd.

Roman Grosjean, on the radio, after qualifying his Haas on the third row: "Woo hoo!"

David Hobbes, tv commentator and ex-driver (including F1): "Woo hoo in French is woo hoo."

Vettel is leading with 10 laps to go. Exciting race!

Poor Ricciardo was out early.

Looks like a competitive season if this keeps up.

Did anybody actually see an overtake that wasn't on a backmarker or someone (Alonso) about to retire?
How boring. I fast forwarded through most of it...

I thought it was interesting that Bottas had fresher tyres and was actually catching Hamilton on the last dozen or so laps - the Aussie commentators worked out he could easily challenge Hamilton for 2nd place by the finish at the rate he was going ... but it never happened.
Was he told to pull back and settle for 3rd?

Hi, as I understand it, the Haas car is essentially pretty much just a Ferrari. It is common for engine developers to sell engines and some other parts to competitors, but I think that Haas is largely Ferrari technology.

F1 teams don't really worry about the nationality of drivers - they go for the best driver/deal etc.
F1 IS truly international, and as you will see the drivers are expected to be multilingual.

I've just watched my recording of the race highlights. No Safety cars ! Unusual at Melbourne - looks like a wickedly complicated track.

Sad about the Honey Badger (Ricciardo) - called that for his big toothy smile. Not much to smile about for him today.

Don't dismiss either Red Bull, or Force India.

Two weeks to China!
