Bluesy and folk stuff
Arrangements by Woody Mann, Toby Walker, Tommy Emmanuel, Pete Huttlinger, Masaaki Kishibe, Eric Clapton, Neil Young and sometimes the Beatles. Other times I'll just make stuff up.

Country/Americana like a lot of others, even if I am Australian.
Even if I am playing out of a generic songbook for guitar, I mostly like to give it a country style bent whether it was recorded that way or not. Last edited by Steel and wood; 03-23-2017 at 02:46 AM. |

Guitar is my second instrument and what I play on it is mostly James Taylor type material. However, the hog loves Bossa-Nova so I've got to learn some more Jobim.
That being said, these are the last 3 simple songs I learned. Not sure what genre I'd stick them in. G-Love - Loving Me https://youtu.be/THYTFq1iXX8 Damon Albarn - Melancholy Hill https://youtu.be/_lAjs75dkho Bob Marley - Redemption Song https://youtu.be/OFGgbT_VasI BC

I am British, English, and southern, and proud to be so, but British music styles have never attracted me.
My music is what I encapsulate as American influenced folk. It says little but gives people a category that some seem to need. I have listened to and absorbed a lot of types of blues. I have played guitar, mandolin and dobro and sang in bluegrass bands American (specifically Texas singer-songwriters) I like corny old country (i.e. not industrial Nashville) Latterly I have been influenced by "new old time" - Cahalen Morrison and Eli West, and Pharis and Jason Romero. Some examples :

Man, I like everything. Ninety percent of what I listen to, I don't play - what I end up playing most of the time is 60s - 70s pop tunes, because that's what my band plays. I learn all those tunes on acoustic, because that's what I've always done, but with the band most of them are played on electric guitar. I have my own format for learning new songs: first I work up the arrangement we're going to use in the band, and get that down. After I'm happy with that, I'm free to take the tunes out for a spin on the acoustic with no restrictions. I'll speed them up, slow 'em down, put in lead breaks where there were none, etc. Just have fun with them.
A couple of random selections off the top of my head: Without You - Badfinger Walk Away Renee - Left Banke For Your Love - Yardbirds |

Currently, I'm into fingerstyle chord-melody. Solo jazz guitar. Takes up most of my practice time.
However, I still dig out the steel string and a flatpick and burn through some bluegrassy stuff. |

On gigs, most of our stuff is Country infused Americana and Classic Rockish stuff (my partner plays banjo).
My preferred style. Old school 8 & 12 bar Blues. Key to the Highway You've got to move

I can't play any of it yet but I am in the process of selling my motorcycle and will be grabbing a couple of acoustics. I tend to like solo pieces, and would love to learn a few Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, Richard Smith type tunes this year. I've been playing tunes like "The Clap" by Steve Howe for 30 years and like that style the most. I've been working on Andrew York's "Sunburst" and "Desiderata" by Greg Howe lately and having a lot of fun with both.

Quote:
Our band plays Contemporary Christian, much of which could be categorized as "light rock", so I play my Telecaster most of the time.

I do mostly finger-style arrangements across genres. Things I do include Celtic tunes, fiddle tunes, Beatles, jazz classics, come classical, Joplin Rags etc. I do a little flat-picking but that's not my primary focus.

I like strummy pop/rock and Americana.
Jason Isbell and Ryan Adams are my favorites right now, along with 90's pop rock like Sister Hazel, REM and Hootie. Oh wait--you said "one or two songs." "Elephant" and "Something More Than Free" by Jason Isbell and "Come Pick Me Up" and "My Sweet Carolina" by Ryan Adams.
