From my "Dad song" - here & gone
The old man now is many years gone - but the son still feels him and the feeling’s so strong The fears, and anger – the jealous rage – and the painful secrets - of another age He did his best the only way he knew – knowing all who you love will be taken from you He’s gone and dead but lives on in the head, and the heart of the son who carries his thread And the ache in his back, the pain in his hands, his laugh, his words and his fears and plans They belong to his father – but now –------------- he understands

You could probably choose almost ANY Tom Waits song for this thread -- such a great writer. The following lines are the last stanza from his song "Time," off the RAIN DOGS album:
So put a candle in the window And a kiss upon my lips As the dish outside the window Fills with rain Oh and just like a stranger With the weeds in your heart Pay the fiddler off Till I come back again Folks, as the OP here, a reminder to PLEASE take the time to give us the title of the tune AND the writer or performer. I always feel it's crucially important to acknowledge the songwriter. Many of us would like to follow up on these great songs to learn and possible even perform them, but we're left with too little information to do so. Thanks! Thanks to everyone so far for your awesome contributions. scott memmer |

A fellow singer-songwriter's wife was a n amatuer masseuse, and was giving me a massage whilst I ramvbled on about my Dad. She said that I should write a song about my feeling benignly haunted by him. "everyone should have a "dad-song" she said. I think she is right.

Oh he reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys
Said "I've got no further use for these. I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome, Swooping down from heaven to carry me home" And he gave her one last kiss and died And he gave her his Vincent to ride. Richard Thompson

And for the first time since he died
Late last night I cried I wondered when I was going to do that For my old man Steve Goodman |

And another thing! The first time I heard Prine do it I was amazed how different it sounded from Steve's rendition. It sounds like a John Prine song coming through him... |
