Here's the top braced with Larson-esque spruce/wenge/spruce bracing...

Great looking guitar Hans! X braced oak/adi grand concert also seems like ideal ingredients in your recipe for tone.

Thumbs up

Man, that top is already barking!

Beautiful and functional looking design-thanks to you both for showing us. Excited to see the finished instrument

Ok, what's Ladder/X bracing?

I guess I could guess what it is, but how about more details. Is this something new for your designs, or is there a picture somewhere if I go searching? Another question, what's the goal compared to your other bracing schemes?

Chuck, here's the top for the 6 string MJ in the thread below...
If I ever get caught up (hah!), I will use the bracing pattern on a GC.

Here's the build thread for both the 6 and the 12 MJ. The 12 is almost ready to buff.

http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...d.php?t=204746

I've always been partial to ladder braced guitars, Chuck, but the problem has always been the possibility of the top developing the "potato chip look" where the area behind the bridge bulges up (normal), but the area in front of the bridge sinks. The original intent of X bracing was to fix the latter problem, so I thought to combine the two patterns. The major factor to me is the spruce bridge patch that spans the top and the lack of the lower part of the X. I'm hoping that the ladder sound will still be there...

Is the bracing you used on the cocobolo/engelmann grand concert the same what you've done for Ed's grand concert? I've played that one, so it gives me a reference point.

Kinda similar, but different. Also, that particular instrument is Engelmann/Coco, and frankly, I just don't get the Coco tone...I don't like to work with the wood, and I don't care for the tone. Too sterile or "studio" or something. Someone told me they take a heck of a long time to break in. Oak is right there tonally, and you just have to break in the red spruce...

This is going to have larsen style x bracing on it with the dot and dash purfling and ladder detail. It will also have some inlay and binding on the neck and headstock. It is a traditional look and should be a sweet guitar. Oak was used for guitars in the 20's and 30's by several companies, Stella and Oscar Schimdt. I have owned some originals but vintage guitars are hard to keep in one piece without a lot of maintinence. While this guitar probably will not replicate the early Stellas it should be a lot nicer. Most of those guitars were cheaply made. In my experience, oak has a dry woody tone and is clear sounding. Not with the overtones you find in rosewood. With the x bracing it should have a good bass response and sustain. Something that is lacking in some braced guitars. The choice of Adi as top wood should add volume and clarity. Hans chose a sweet looking piece for the top and I couldn't be happier with that. I like that wide grain look. The oak is also very nice. We were going to put a backstripe down the center but nixed that idea. That wood is so nice that I don't think we need to break it up.
Hey Ed,
I got a chance to see the body of your Brentrup GC. Also had a chance to play 2 of his oak/adi parlors this last week. You're going to be a lucky fellow.

Chuck: glad you got to play the parlors. Hans lives far away from me so I won't be able to check them out. I have been watching this thread in anticipation. Although the GC is a very traditional style, I view it as a piece of functional art. A guitar that I can play and that is nice to look at also. This on a will probably be a part of my estate one day.

Finally had some time to get to the neck on this one...

Little more of a V than I normally use, but not real sharp...

Usual slot head and Spanish joint...

Heel...

Should have it in finishing in a couple of weeks.
