In my mind, there is a sort of charm to owning just one guitar. But in my own reality/taste, I know that nothing give me the bassy power while strumming than a good rosewood bodied dreadnaught. And that dreadnaught will not give me the more articulate/balanced/refined tone when fingerpicking than a smaller bodied guitar will.
I could live with just one guitar and be thankful for it but I'm also thankful that I could accumulate a couple of really pleasing guitars of various sizes.

Two. I could see myself being content with two guitars - one Spruce over Mahogany and one with either Spruce over East Indian Rosewood or Cedar over East Indian Rosewood.

Short answer is yes. I'm close. One Martin dread and one Martin 000. I have lived on my boat for 14 years. Space is at a premium. I spend a lot of time babying these guitars. I may sell both and get en Emerald composite. Just can't seem to find one to play around me. If it sounds as good as the reviews, I could be content with just that one.

I can probably survive with one.....but I would rather live with several.

Everybody has to have a minimum of two...
a 6 and a 12 string. |

Three
I think I could be happy with three. A martin 000-28, maybe a mahogany back and sides guitar that I haven't narrowed down yet, and I really want to get a classical nylon as well. But then I also have my $100 beater guitar for campfires and such. And then there's the mandolins, ukes, banjo, and violin.
different sounds

I don't really wish it to be. I know how it'd end up though. I'd be left standing with my two Gibson's - the A3 mandolin and the L-1 guitar. Too many stories.

I'm a one-trick pony. There was a time though when I could conjure all kinds of excuses to own many.

Nope. As previously stated, I could live with one but since I have some out-of-this-world guitars, there's no reason to .

At 63 years of age my wife and I have been on a quest to simplify and downsize for the last few years and it's not done yet.
I've sold off much of my PA equipment and a few guitars but there are more to go. I'm gifting my beloved Tele to a friend and gifting a few other assorted instruments to other friends. (It's good Karma to give instruments away...) I have 3 or 4 more acoustics to sell off and I'll be down to a single Taylor 322 and a Cordoba crossover nylon. (I have already sold off some MUCH more expensive guitars, but luckily I've learned what I really appreciate in a guitar.) I have some recording projects I'd like to eventually get done and I'm much happier playing more and changing strings less. Too many instruments to care for is a vexation of spirit. We live in a rural location and I sometimes think about which instruments would be grabbed on the way to the storm cellar, and having only a few "favorites" takes care of that decision. Besides, when we downsize to a tiny house that's going to limit my ability to store all these instruments! |
