One of these, hands down:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/V22InfiCombo

- and when you're ready add three of these:

http://www.thetubestore.com/Tubes/Pr...ies-7025-12AX7

- two of these:

http://www.thetubestore.com/Tubes/Pr...9-Premium-EL84

- and one of these:

http://www.eminence.com/speakers/spe...el=Swamp_Thang

- and you'll be able to keep up with these:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender/V...r-Combo-Amp.gc

BTW I own both, and I've done it; best little all-tube tone box $400 can buy - and if you still need more power and/or clean headroom, just add $50 and step up to the big leagues:

I owned one of those for a bit and was stunned on how good the cleans were.

I use a Fender Vaporizer with my Telecaster, the bright channel on the amp really accents the Tele Twang.

I would go with a modeling pedal and a small powered PA speaker. I am using a Boss Fender Deluxe Reverb pedal and a Yamaha DBR10. Jon

Sorry, for borrowing your tread eyesore, but while on the subject of amps, What is a mini solution to that Cali Clean/warm sound - but still sounding great amp?

I understand you can get great sound even with very little wattage. Like with really old amps. I traded my trusted old Roland Cube 30 with an old Russian camera, with my brother.

I'm bald, live in a flat and won't be playing too loud

(NB: I have an active mini PA that is useful)

One of these:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Bugera/V...r-Combo-Amp.gc

- with one of these:

http://www.thetubestore.com/Tubes/Pr...ies-7025-12AX7

- and one of these:

There's a built in attenuator that lets you dial back to 0.1W, so you should be able to play without disturbing your neighbors - and if that's still too loud it's one of the very few all-tube amps that'll also let you use a set of these:

Thanks for the advice. (tube-links don't work though)
Must say it was a bit more than I've envisioned for a mini solution. But, I did write great sound..

Used Blues Jr. - Great clean tones.

Laney Cub10 - $249 new

Darker tone than a BJ, but excellent for the money.

The Bugera's I have played were remarkable for the $.

Carvin Vintage 16

How much clean volume do you need?

The thing with digital and hybrid amps is the repair cost in this case. Those amps are only about 250 new, and after reading the service manual it looks like the issue lies in the solid state realm - before the tubes see the signal. You might could sell it as-is, someone like me or another electronic hobbyist might want it to gut and rebuild it as a straight up tube amp. I don't know that it would be worth the bench time, unless it were under warranty.

I might be biased but I believe the Blues Junior is the price point for the type of tube amp you are looking for.

The Super Champ's signal path is this:

Guitar signal enters, then is amplified by two transistor circuits. Then EQ, effects, and other sound adjustments are made. That signal goes to the tube circuitry, where it sees one gain stage, a phase splitter, then the power tubes. Your symptoms of really quiet clean, and really loud distorted, point to an issue in the digital board that processes the signal prior to the tubes.

You'd need a signal generator and bench equipment like an oscilloscope to trace down the problem, and then the easiest fix is replace the digital board anyway. Second, the filter caps are charged to over 350V DC and can hold that charge for days if not weeks even if the amp is unplugged. Working in a live tube amp is not for the uninitiated without the knowledge and tools to work safely around that high a voltage, and identifying that fault requires just that. I build and repair them as a hobby, and I still am absolutely paranoid probing live circuits.

Most Fender amps have a 5 year warranty, BTW. How old is yours?

A Ceriatone Champ Ultra kit (ex tubes) is only about $300. If the OP is happy tinkering, that could be a cheap option.
