Default 12 fret, slot head with dreadsize sound box?

What production guitar company (as opposed to custom maker) makes a slot- head, 12 fret with a dreadnaught or other larger sound box?

The more I play my 12 fret-ter the more I like it...but I would like an even bigger sound...maybe a dreadnaught, but with a slot head and and 12 frets to the body...?

Thanks in advance

Martin and Santa Cruz both make them. Most botique builders also make them.

Gruhn Guitars have several Martin customs made for them.

Happy hunting.

Martin makes several including the HD-28VS

and I'd check Collings and Santa Cruz. The 12-fret dread has been around since the very beginning, here's a 1933 Martin D-18 (actually a 13-fretter, but who's counting?).

Early Martin dreads were all 12-fret slotheads until 1934 when the first 14-fret paddleheads showed up.

The Martin Ditson reissues are fantastic if you like a wide nut (1 7/8").

Thanks, so far!

I really like the Martin HD-28VS.
I gotta sell a couple others before I could get one...but at least I don't have to take a second mortgage...and how I do love the Martin sound.

Bougeois makes a slothead version of their Martin Simpson. Saw it a while back at Artisons in Franklin, Tn. I have a Martin Simpson the is a 12 fret dread with a cutaway that is just wonderful. Just not a slothead. Love 12 fretters.

Hi Russ,

I have played the Martin HD-28VS and it really is a very good sounding guitar -- very warm, big sounding guitar. And it looks good! I bet you would love it.

Some 12 fret Ds come with wider necks than you might be expecting. The Larrivee SD50 and SD50 come with a 1 7/8" nut. The Collings DS2H has a 1 13/16" nut. And while the current SCGC 12D has a 1 3/4" nut width, for years they were 1 7/8". The nut width on Martin 12 fret Ds is 1 3/4", but they feel wider/roomier (depending on what you feel about feel).

Only you will know whether this is good, bad, or of no consequence, but be aware of the possibility of a wider neck and check it out if you are in the market.

If the same is true for these 12 fret dreads as it is for the 00015SM I am getting, it is not that the upper bout is extended by two frets, it is that the placement of the bridge drops back into the lower bout about half an inch. So same effect as having forward X bracing. The 12 fretters definitely sound larger and to my ears have more note separation. I own an Epiphone AJ500 12 fret which is a nice guitar, but had to fit a bridge doctor which has compromised the sound. The Martin 00015SM sounds amazing. Dry, big, clear, incredible definition on the low end. A 12 fret dread is on my wishlist.

I had an HD-28VS for a short while. Sound is phenominal but the neck just didn't feel good to me. Hope you land a nice one.
