Default What's your Favorite Acoustic guitar piece?

I'd love to amass a collection of great acoustic guitar songs and I'd like some input from you folks here. I've gotten on to Leo Kottke, but I like some stuff from Extreme and other "less classic" folks too... Who does everyone like in here?

I assume you're asking about particular songs? If so, here are a few that stand out for me:

It Is Well With My Soul - Doyle Dykes
Berkley Springs - Don Ross
I Carry Your Heart - Michael Hedges
Mozart In Hell - Dan Crary & Bepe Gambetta
Presbyterian Guitar - John Hartford
Jesus Joy Of Man's Desiring - favorite is Laurence Juber's version
Jam In The Pocket - Phil Keaggy
Ol' Brother Hubbard - Tommy Emmanuel

There are plenty more, but those are some of my favorites for the day.

Can't complain with any of architectx's suggestions. Pick up CDs by the following

Don Ross (especially Passion Sessions)
Laurence Juber
Al Petteway
Doyle Dykes
Alex DeGrassi
Preston Reed
Doug Smith
Jim Earp
Michael Hedges
Earl Klugh
Ed Gerhard

They represent a pretty wide array of styles. Follow the ones you like. Go to:

www.acousticmusicresource.com

They have a wide variety of albums and amazing acoustic guitar players.

If you want some classical guitar music, Pepe Romero "Guitar Solos" is my all time favorite classical guitar album.

I listen to many of the artists mentioned in previous posts (Kottke, Dykes), but I am also heavily influenced by:

Davey Graham
John Renbourn
Bert Jansch
John Williams
Joe Pass

Davey Graham, Renbourn and Jansch were part of the British folk-baroque thing I thing and I know they were influences of more well-known popular guitarists like Jimmy Page of Zeppelin fame.

Pretty much any record that Renbourn has done is worth a listen. Check out 'Jack Orion' or 'Rosemary Lane' by Bert Jansch. I have the Davey Graham record, Folk, Blues and Beyond which is pretty amazing and ahead of its time (1965). I have an ealier record of his where he is covering a lot of pop standards - the playing is great.

Also recommended is John Williams; recording of Agustin Barrios-Mangore pieces entitled 'From the Jungles of Paraguay'; a good intro to classical guitar music would also be his 1991 recording 'The Seville Concert' - this has a variety of classical styles from baroque to spanish.

OK - Joe Pass is not strictly speaking an acoustic guitarist, but he is well worth checking out. Two of my favorite recordings of his are entitled 'Virtuoso' - which are solo guitar arrangements of Jazz standards; as well as 'Chops' a studio recording of jazz tunes for guitar (played by Pass) and bass (the acoustic, stand-up kind), which is played by the amazing Neils-Henning Orsted Pederson.

As you can see, my musical interests are all over the map, but the comon thread of course is the great guitar playing!

Individual songs I can recommend:
Reynardine by Bert Jansch
Black Water Side by Bert Jansch
Mist Covered Mountains of Home by John Renbourn
The South Wind, as recorded by John Renbourn
Bunyan's Hymn/I Saw Three Ships, as recorded by Renbourn
Clap by Steve Howe (this is the song that first got me interested in acoustic guitar)
Sevilla, recorded by John Williams (this one got nme interested in Classical guitar)

Mmmm... Here comes:

"Little Martha" by Duane Allman, from the Allman Brothers "Eat a Peach"
"If I Fell" and "The Water is Wide", arranged and played by Ed Gerhard on "Counting the Ways"
"Larry's World" by Russ Freeman on "Sounds of Wood and Steel"
"Rural Life", "Dance with Me", and "Granpa's Lullaby", Pat Kirtley on his "Rural Life" CD
Any of the fingerstyle works by Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers
Don't ask me why, but I love the little intro to "Watching the River Flow" by Loggins and Messina.

Cool Finally....

Hmm.......well, it's so hard to choose, but I'll force myself to pick just one. At the moment, I'd have to say "Java Man" by M. Hedges. There's just a "feel" to it that really appeals to me. Never get tired of hearing it. I'm also thrilled to be able to say that I'm starting to actually get a handle on it (somewhat), now that I found out what tuning is used (it's DAEGCD). Very exciting!!!

Amen to Ed Gerhard. His phrasing and melodic passages sound so effortless. The Water is Wide and Tennessee.
