Well the Blizzard puts out about 10-11 db stronger signal than the Neumann. Not much difference in sound quality when A/B test was given. Blended together sounds best, but you do have to turn up the volume on the 102 and turn down the volume on the 4000 to get the volume levels to match. Noise level on both mics while quiet recording was very low.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the Blizzard 4000 mic.
Good to hear. The 20dB(A) rating seems rather high for a larger diaphragm studio mic these days.

The Blizzard 4000's user's guide states that it has a 74 dB S/N Ratio...

Not bad...

An added little bonus feature of the Blizzard 4000 is it's four little blue led lights in the capsule that light up when phantom power is present. I like having a mic that lights up. It matches my monitors that have a white light that shows when they are on and my red lava lamp. I have a very colorful studio when the main lights are off.

Here's a quick sound clip of the Blizzard 4000 mic straight into Sonar, no effects or EQ applied.....just the raw mic. Notice how quiet the mic is at the end of the clip.....

That "ambient" sound doesn't seem quiet at all. Compare it to your Neumann track. I realize that the overall volume is different and perhaps you did a fade out, but even then the background noise/hiss is far less noticeable than that on the Blizzard.

As usual there is lots of background noise. Sounds like computer fans. That takes quite a bit away from the recordings.

Yes computer fan, the mic was about two feet away from the computer at the time of the recording. The Neummans were in another room shielded by the Auralex Mudgaurd. The Neumman sample was done a few months ago...That's why you're hearing a difference.

The Blizzard sample was just a quick recording with the mic set up on my desktop.

I'll tell ya, those little blue led lights come in handy...I had the wrong xlr cable plugged in and the lights didn't come on. Once I had the right cable plugged in, I had phantom power and all was well. I'm beginning to love those lights !!!!

So as not to hijack the new mic day thread, I'd like to comment about the Blizzard 4000 going into the ART TPS II Tube Pre-amp....

Wow what a difference that makes...not only in volume but tonal quality. What a very nice combination this is !!!!! The difference is night and day better.

In one of the demo video's of the MXL 4000 mic the guy said to get the MXL but invest in a good pre-amp...boy was he right. After hearing what the ART pre-amp can do with the MXL and 102, I'm curious what a high quality pre-amp would sound like.

I use my MXL 4000's (two of 'em) with an ART MPA II preamp. Sounds pretty good to my ear.

(I also have the ART Pro VLA II compressor)
