Looking for a recommendation - small builder $2500 J-45 Blues Hog
Hi,
I'm looking for a bluesy J-45 Hog recommendation. I own a Gibson J-45TV but I'm not that impressed with it. I want to sell it or trade it for a slope shoulder J-45 shape from a smaller guitar builder. Preferably 12 Fret - but I could give in on that. I have a 12 fret Alvarez SB70 that I love. It seems like the Collings/SC/Burgeoisis are all $3500-$4000. I play mostly finger picking - and the TV doesn't get me the sound I'd like unless using a pick. Then it booms. Can anyone recommend a less-mass-produced guitar maker (than Gib) that produces a clear sounding slopey for ~ $2500. Thanks. |

You may want to look in the used market at Kopps, Walker, or Fairbanks.
Most seen to go at just north of your budget. Good luck. |

Perhaps you might like a Guild Orphium.
Budget sleeper would be a Pono. Check them out.

Don't know how much they cost in the States but a used Huss & Dalton DS-12 would be well worth a try. I own a DS-12 Custom and its NOTHING like the J-45 at all. Its extremely responsive to even the lightest touch and has a warm yet very clear tone (deep bass yet plenty of clarity and sweet trebles).
I also own a great, vintage toned adi/hog J-45 'banner reissue' and i absolutely love it but it does not project like my H&D, Collings or lightly handbuilt L-00. Its dry and woody with the characteristic 'Gibson thump' on the low E. I find it wonderful for fingerpicking and drop tunings but i have to put a lot more 'in' to get the tone i want.

I would HIGHLY recommend you talk to Bill Meyer (Jack Straw Guitars). Bill makes top of the line classic designs like slope shouldered dreads at a very reasonable price. His guitars have been praised by Dream Guitars and are a very affordable alternative. He has just started work on a 000-18 "Norman Blake" for me. 3-4 month build time, total one-man production. Bill ran the shop at Buffalo Brothers during the "glory years". Great, great man to work with! However, his Base Price is $3000.

Maybe Halcyon has something. Halcyon Guitars.
Small builder great pricing, especially with the strong dollar.

My thoughts exactly. I know he's made a J-45 for another one of his clients and they we're more than satisfied with the result. John
