Default Microphone for Bose Compact

I'm going to be picking up a Bose Compact for solo acoustic gigs. From my friends that use the Bose units I understand that they're a little picky about vocal mics and tend to be feedback prone when paired with the wrong mic. I have a pair of EV Cobalt 07 mics that have been great for every venue I've played so far, but I don't know how they'll work with the Bose. What are you guys using? I know a trusty old SM58 will work but I'm not a big fan of those.

A lot depends on the venue and how close the 'stick' is to your mic. Try the SM58 first.

A Shure Beta58 is what I used when I had my Bose L1 Compact. I'll bet the on-board ToneMatch preset is for a Shure SM58/Shure Beta 58. I like the Beta 58 over the SM58 because it just sounds cleaner and more intelligible.

The majority of places I play have a very small stage so most of the time I'm going to be right on top of the stick.

Assuming you are a right hander ...

Have the Mic angled upwards (about 45%) towards the neck/body join. Have the bose set up slightly behind and to the right of your right shoulder.

The mic is going to be used for vocals, I use JJB pickups in my guitars. But I assume the same mic placement could be used for vocals too.

Yes, same basic set up for vocal mic. I'd try the SM58 before getting something else, just due to the proximity of the stick. The Beta does have a clearer sound, but may be more prone to feedback because of that.

Nope. The Beta58 also has greater rejection of feedback as well as sounding better.

I bet that 'greater rejection of feedback' is due to the pickup pattern, not the capsule itself, and with a stick sitting just behind/beside it there's not much difference in the pickup pattern.

I was thinking the OP HAD an SM58 to try out, but re-reading, maybe he doesn't. I'd try to get one to try out before I bought a Beta 58.

Hey guys, I don't currently have a SM58 but I have used them a bunch over the years. They are a good mic, but I don't think they're the best for my voice. I really like the way my current EV Colbalt 07 sounds with my voice, but I have a feeling it's going to feedback like crazy with the Compact. I also need to keep the budget close to $100, which is good for a SM58 or a Sennheiser mic that's been suggested too. Unfortunately around here there's no place to compare and there's also no place that carries the Compact unit so I'm going to be ordering both.

You may still have time to go from the Bose to the Fishman SA220!

LMAO!!! I wondered how long it would take a Fishman guy to show up! I know the SA220 is a great unit, but I've spent a lot of time with the Bose units and I'm sure they're "right" for my sound. Thanks for the laugh bud!

Is that the Senn 835? I have one of those as well as an SM58. The Senn is brighter, for sure. Hopefully you ordered from a place that will let you reutrn what doesn't work for you.

I haven't ordered yet, I'm trying to find out as much as I can so I don't have to worry about needing to return it later. Probably looking at ordering late next month.
