I don't own that particular mic, but I've owned several MXL mics over the years. MXL is a bit of a mixed bag due to quality control. Sometimes you'll get an okay mic, sometimes not. If money is an issue, there are worse choices you can make in that price range. And it's not a bad candidate for modifications down the road.

That's a great price. They do this periodically. Stock it's not much better than an SM57 but if you can solder go to microphone-parts.com and get a new capsule. It will make this mic sound very good. Worth way more than the total you'll spend on it.

Note that I'm not saying 57s are bad. I've heard some great stuff done when a 57 was all that was available.

I have one that I use for vocals, but I did record a video using it to mic the guitar once. The video is a bit hissy, but that's because I didn't have the levels set right in the video camera and I couldn't be bothered re-recording it. When I use it as a vocal microphone it works well, at least for my purposes.

I've owned the MXL 990 in the past and, frankly, I wasn't impressed with it.

I regularly use a pair of their small diaphragm 603s model for acoustic guitar and have been happy with the results, and have a 15 year old 2001P (large diaphragm) that I like to use when I need to warm up vocals. The 990 just didn't fit for me on vocal or instrumental work.

YMMV...

In my experience, MXLs are all very, very bright. You can get good sounds out of them, but they take a lot of finagling.

I have an MXL 660 and 990. I find both great for studio vocals and acoustic guitar.

It's a decent fifty dollar mic. There isn't much more to say about it than that.

I have one; it works; I wouldn't use it on anything I needed great results for, but hey - it's a fifty dollar mic in a world where decent recording mics for a home studio will start at $300+ and will hit $1,500+ in a New York Minute.
