I have photos on my computer but from what I read in the instructions, they can not be attached to a thread.

I have never seen a solid top guitar that was not bookmatched.

Congrats to the new owners of the 50th anniversary model. I saw my first one "in the flesh" at GC over lunch today. Stopped me dead in my tracks. Except for the typeface on the headstock, which is different from my 1969 FG180, it's very close to being a clone looks-wise...no issue with 2-tone top on the one here. Played beautifully, too. Very nice sonics, though different from my old guy (as you'd expect). They had it marked at $899. For the super-familiar feel and the all-solid wood, I actually contemplated a rash purchase.

Thing is, though, even if mine is ancient and all-lam, it's gotten crazy lightweight over the years (my imagination? dunno), feels almost like a part of me when I pick it up, has a tone I can't get on anything else I play. And it's THE guitar that's been all over the US with me, seen me through down times, heartbreaks, uptimes and multiple moves for 47 years. Plus, I had it set up beautifully about a year ago, with new bone nut cut to wider spacing, and it's about as sweet as an original Nippon Gakki gets. So I guess I'll let others grab the great-great-many-times-great-grandchildren...they're solid and they're gorgeous. But mine still has soul.

(Not saying I might not have some jealous feelings down the road, though. Anyone on the fence...look REAL close at this anniversary beast. I'm serious.)

Dirk

This is a photo from the internet that seems to look like its book matched. So evidently some are and some are not. That doesn't seem right to me.

It's not that hard to attach a pic if you upload to a photo site like Flickr or Google Photos.

Its likely book matched. I think you are experiencing what is called runout.

Not sure how these will look but here's mine:

Can't work out how to post pics again so here's a link!

Edit: Just been having a look up close in the flesh. The top really is gorgeous and I'm extremely hard-pressed to tell whether the sides are book-matched, as the grain in the middle on both sides is so fine and the reflection of the gloss finish makes comparisons really tough. The grain at the outer edges are uniformly wider on each side.

I offered to post a picture of Drive914's guitar, so here it is:

And here is a photo from Fastestlouigie's Flicker link and to me they look very similar.

Thanks... they both look bookmatched with runout. That's what I was thinking originally.

They look book matched, just one side is a bit darker than other.

Thank you Rob and thanks for everyones input. One of my other passions is vintage Porsche's. One of which is a national concours d'Elegance winner. So obviously I'm pretty anal when it comes to detail and that's probably why I was so surprised when I first saw my new guitar. Imagine if the paint on the cars door didn't match the fender. But now I realize we are talking about wood here and I can't expect perfection.
