Thoughts on the Taylor PS14ce Honduran Rosewood?

I've had my eye on this for a while:

However there doesn't seem to be a lot of discussion about this guitar online, possibly because its new and prohibitively expensive for most people. I wonder if anyone here has had the pleasure of trying it and could tell a bit about the tone and playability etc. Thanks

Yes that would be interesting but my 1st reaction is just what you said, too expensive for a Taylor. For 10 you could get a single maker custom. But yes Id like to know what people think that have played one. Im just guessing here but do you think it would sound like a Taylor? ;-)

What is a maker custom?

Ah I see. Are there any individual luthiers that do the kind of flashy abalone inlays that Taylor does? I like custom luthier guitars too, although I do find that sometimes they all tend to look the same.

All things being equal, honduran rings like a bell in the midrange. A big bell loud bell. Redwood is warm, full, and harmonically rich.

Now, my opinion of the recording they offered on this model... Meh. I really enjoy my Taylor 816ce from 2014. But, I don't hear enough tone from this new Taylor model to justify the price.

Given the amazing variety of luthier-built guitars available for $10k, no Taylor I’ve ever played is worth it. Especially if you’re not in a rush and can stand a bit of a wait to receive it.

I dont care how good you may think it sounds, I didnt, it is so gaudy that I couldnt watch the whole demo. It makes me think Viet Nam. Those guys over there are really talented inlay artists but not my taste. I dont like Martin 45 either. To respond to the custom comment. Custom builders put their money into the sound and build not the flash. However, its your money and your guitar so do what pleases you. What Ive said is just to give you some perspective from a guy thats played a ton.

I understand that, however, personally to my taste, I find that even the highest end custom builts end up looking like $500 factory made guitars, simply because as you say, no concern is given to how it looks. To me, I like my instruments to look beautiful, as well as sounding good.

Check out what some of our AGF sponsors are building. These folks build one at a time, and voice everything to achieve a cohesive SOUND.

Once I was taking the RT tour and talked to Bob T for a few minutes. When I complimented him on the understated looks of the RTs and the way the woods and workmanship were always perfect he paused for a moment and then said:
“You can’t hear inlay.”
then he threw us out of his office and went back to work.

Funny, when you consider the amount of Moolah Taylor has made on inlays!

Have you played any single bench Luthier built instruments? If not, you might be in for a nice surprise!

Here is my John Kinnaird custom. You can’t get most of the ergonomic stuff on these JK customs from any factory, including Taylor. But some of our sponsors will build this kind of thing.

A nicer demo for sure. Value is a personal decision, but I don't think many of the factories charge that much of a premium for those tone woods. I think I might be inclined until it went on sale or negotiate a bit. But I will agree that the guitar in that video was more appealing.

You guys saying that independent luthiers don’t make anything more interesting, visually, than a $500 guitar might want to look into a Ryan Nightingale (I think it was a Nightingale) or many of Erwin Somogyi’s builds.
