As others have said, there's excellent indie/alternative rap and hip-hop, too, most of it protest or social commentary. When it comes to just about any genre, in fact, be it hip-hop, country, rock, metal, folk or whatever, indie/alternative is where most of the meat can be found.

If that policy covers "classic rock" that predates '82, I might be willing to make that deal.

The only one of those I know is El-p who I enjoy. Do you like Eden, the Rap Beautician ? His stuff that I've heard is great, and the lyrical content pretty much defies all of the usual expectations.

Man there is almost too much on this topic to even begin to explain my thoughts. I am a 26 year old "indulgent 20-something" who has seen my generation either:
A - Fail to be creative enough to write lyrics about the world we live in. B - Perpetuate this recent "me, me, me" attitude and write songs that revolve around going out and partying with a middle finger in the air at all the "haters". It is sad to say the least. How many artists on the radio can even play an instrument? Not needed really, computers have made it possible for these "artists" to hit a few buttons on their laptop and have it spit out a mind numbing beat with a few electronic doo-dads mixed in. Take that droning beat and repeat "we like to party, we gonna party till the sun comes up" and viola! You are now the top downloaded song on iTunes. Sad state of affairs......... Thankfully there are people more along the indie/hip hop/country genres to keep the thoughtful music alive, as has been previously stated. I just hope this nonsense phase of music dies out quicker than it came on. After the 90's alternative bands and "garage band" music phased into the hip-hop and electronic music of the 2000's, the quality of the top 100 radio stations have taken a severe nose dive. |

I don't know what modern "folk" is, but it better not be this: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Th...lin_Tape_No_1/

Music is constantly changing and evolving. Like many said before, the whole protest song in folk may be dead, but it's plenty as angsty protest finds it's voice in rock, punk-rock and hip-hop. Here's examples of groups:
Rage Agaisnt The Machine Dead Prez NaS Black Flag Reagan Youth Nirvana Pennywise
