Gordon Lightfoot--Wreck of the Edmunds F.
Trying to learn this song.I got the chords here:
http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/ww...don/10535.html but my 3/4 strumming pattern of DDUDU/DDUDU doesn't sound right. Anyone have a different pattern they use on this song.

I saw a video where he just plays
D(U)DUD(U) / D(U)DUD(U) /... where () means there is a stroke to keep rhythm but no string contact. How does that sound?

I'm no Gordon Lightfoot expert, but I doubt that he would intentionally play contorted chords like that, especially while singing. Perhaps the chord is right, but not the particular voicing used? Or maybe it can be substituted with something that sounds "close enough".

When I play the A11, I use 4th fret B string, 5th fret G string and 6th fret D string.

Fret either on 2 or 3
I grew up in Silver Bay, MN on the north shore of Lake Superior. I can still remember watching Monday Night Football with my Dad when the TV crawler came up & showed the Fitz sinking . . . that boat (as they're called "up North"), often hauled taconite pellets out of what was then known as Reserve Mining Company, in Silver Bay. There are some very good books written about the tragedy. Google it for more info, it is a fascinating piece of history. MY Dad lost some people he knew from the Fitz.
Back to the music, I was looking for a new song to learn just for my 12 string and wow this is perfect. After bouncing around U Tube some people put the fret on 2nd Fret ala Gordon and it seems like most higher pitched singers go for the 3rd fret. I'm going to try both and see what works for me, I can barely play guitar, can't really sing, so maybe the emotion of the GREAT song will carry the moments. Happy strumming and I do think it sounds better on 12 string than a 6, but that's just me . . .
