This past week, I've been splitting my reading time between "Twenty Thousand Roads" by David Meyer (Gram Parsons' biography) and "Charon's Landing" by Jack Du Brul...

The book about Gram has thus far been VERY thick and a bit ponderous in the early going... but I ain't putting it aside!

I'm floored that something I said in this forum actually had an influence on someone. Do you remember the discussion in here some time back about what makes one a historian? My comment was that the answer is the closer one gets to emulating Gordon Prange.

I just finished that one too. I'm not sure I got out of it what Scorsese did, but I don't begrudge the reading.

Hi Ray,

Yes, I do remember. In fact, I got hold of the Prange book on Pearl Harbor because of your recommendation, I am pretty sure.

This book has been quite an incredible read!

Default Summer Reading

I have read some enjoyable fiction, but here are 3 non fiction books I've just finished reading this summer. I thought they were all well written and interesting.

John Boles's biography of Jefferson. Lots of interesting detail but sometimes he seems a little too enamored of his subject.

Mark Bowden's book on Hue. Told from the perspective of multiple participants on both sides of the battle.

Been working through Mickey Baker's jazz guitar book. Well worth the time.

For fun, Nick Bostrom's "Superintelligence," in which we learn we have no idea what the motivations of a given AI will be, and how we might deal with intelligences that exceed our own in both speed and capacity. Interesting and not at all apocalyptic or hysterical - it's very much a reflection on how we might deal with something orders of magnitude more intelligent than we are with which we can actually interact.

..........why are you "reluctant"? No one will criticize your reading interests. (unless it is very controversial)
