Advice with Mahogany headstock finish

I bought a Taylor 314ce for a very decent price.

Previous owner painted the headstock face. I sanded all of the paint off and wiped clean. I bought an exterior spray oil base polyurethane from HD.
I put on a first coat but then wiped excess with a rag to make a thin coat. The directions stated recoat could be in 3 hours. So I lightly sanded with
400 grit, used a tack rag and sprayed on the 2nd coat but didn't wipe. After 24 hours it is still very tacky.

As I'm reading, one site said there is an oil in the mahogany that could keep it from drying properly.

Our house is 68 degrees with 35% humidity + -.

Is there something better to use?

Tack rags can contaminate certain finishes.

Possibly your coats were too thick?

Let dry for a week and see how it goes. If no improvement, strip and start over.

Tru Oil is easy to use for a headstock refinish

I looked it up. Maybe use the Sealer and Filler before the Tru Oli?

Darn. If I go this route how do I make sure I remove all of the polyurethane?
The headstock face is very grainy.

I still suggest wait a week or even a month for the stuff you put on to harden before you undo it. Be patient.
