Default Speaker problem

My guitar speaker has really muddy low volume, when I crank the amp it blasts for only for a second and then goes back to low volume. Its an old Rola Celestion G12-30 I just installed in my Ampeg Jet.

Sounds like a questionable connection somewhere. I'd start at the amp and work my way down the chain from cable to speaker, wiggling lines and looking for an intermittent location. It could even be the cable at the backside of the terminal post on the speaker. If you can't find it, I'd bet one of the leads to the voice coil has become intermittent.

I see there are 2 wires from the speaker that attach to the terminals. Could it be that those solder joints have failed? Should I re-solder them and try not to get solder on the cone? Precautions?

Yep. I'd make sure my soldering iron is good and hot and tinned. You can find something like an index card to catch any spatter. Cut it to size and tuck it underneath between the spider (basket) and the cone. Then, one lead at a time, use either a solder sucker or a solder wick to remove the existing solder and start again.

re-soldered the cone to terminal wires and still the same, getting sound but low volume and muddy. Does it need to be re-coned? very frustrated now

Now we've eliminated everything from the amp spigot to the speaker terminal. What's left is the amp and the speaker itself. If the voice coil on the speaker has been severely overheated it could develop resistance and only put out a fraction of its rated output and be fuzzy as well. It is time to try another speaker. IF you end up with the same symptoms with another speaker you'll know it is at the other end of the chain... the amp.

put the original back in and see if it does the same. if so, then it may be a wiring problem. if not, then it is a speaker problem. how does the new one compare with the original, spec wise?

play music!

other speakers work with this amp so there is something wrong with this Celestion. If the voice coil is shot do you have to re-cone the whole thing?

Yes, because the voice coil is the tube attached to and extending back from the cone. Most speaker repairpeople do this routinely.

Ditto. For instance, I've bought a re-coned speaker from Dusty's (DSR) HERE and can vouch for his work.

Weber will recone any of their speakers for $25, not sure if other brands would be an upcharge or not. Even at twice that, it's still cheaper than a new speaker.
