Gibson was getting in on the Hawaiian craze. It was designed to play lap style with a steel. Some have been converted to standard play but they weren't real popular when new so you see even fewer today.

Right. They're rare birds, but they do exist.

This particular example looks as though it was the victim of somebody's home refinishing project. I would be extremely surprised if that turned out to be the original finish.

It's almost certainly an original. This is one model Gibson that might be called "justifiably obscure."
