Low end Parlor Guitars - choices
Hello,
I wish to purchase an inexpensive Parlor guitar. I am attempting to learn some finger picking and love the sounds. I see several in the $199 and less range. They have different scale lengths and I don't know how much emphasis to put on that factor. 12 or 14 Fret necks, and nut width seem important also. Usually play 24 3/4 or 25". I have seen Gretsch Jim Dandy, Fender CP-100, Recording King Dirty Thirty OOO and maybe a few more. I know these are low end, but budget and my learning ability limits the price range. I will need to install some kind of pickup in it eventually..... I was hoping some experienced players would give there opinions on these models or others and the things I should look for and expect at this price point. Thanks for any assistance! welp Last edited by welp; 04-18-2014 at 06:51 AM. Reason: Addition |

PorkPie - some nice guitars there, but nothing at the ops price point of around €199
Not sure of price in US but others to consider might be RK RP-06, Art & Lutherie AMI?

Recording King RP06. Sells for around $275.00 new. Maybe could find a used one. I think it gets better reviews than the dirty thirties model.

Thanks for the response. I looked at some of the Art & Lutherie and they are unfortunately out of my range as is the RP-06. Not hard to believe that they are a better value, but money being what it is...... The guitars I am looking at, just to confirm are size 0, correct? |

Savannah. I'm really impressed by this and the 000. They may or may not benefit by the replacement of the plastic saddle with a micarta one - depends on the individual guitar. And the fret ends may need some smoothing, but for $100 the effort is well worth it.

I recently played a Recording King Dirty Thirties RPH-05 that I was surprisingly impressed with. If I were in the market for a $200 guitar it would definitely be in contention.

total length- 37.5 upper bout- 9.4 lower bout- 13.25 heel depth- 3.4 end block depth- 4 scale- 25.4 nut- 1.75 string spacing- 2.2 gloss finish all laminate It can have a really good sound straight out of the box, or if it is merely ok, it would benefit from an improved fit of the saddle underside to the bridge slot floor. I have the benefit of bridge slot files to make true the floor of the bridge slot, which is too commonly potholed, in low, mid, and even higher level guitars. Over the past several years I've built up a tool kit that enables me to add a measure or two of respect to inexpensive guitars that are mistakingly dismissed as inferior. Best of luck. |

I have and really like my Recording King Dirty Thirties Single O. It sounds good and is very comfortable. I don't think you can go wrong with this guitar as a first guitar. Do add in a case though because unless you live in a stable humidity environment I wouldn't leave any solid top out during dry heat winters here in Ohio. The Recording kings Dirty thirties can be found used for $125.00 to $150.00.
