Default Help Me place Acoustic Panels in my Studio

I will be uploading all of these pictures to GIK acoustics for their free evaluation. However, I will be curious to know your suggestions. Where you think will be the best area to put up Panels: on Walls, corners, or just some more free standing.

Tracking is the most important to me. I will have to mix through headphones. This is a multipurpose area. I work on my guitars, record, make leather products, wood arrows, make Flemish bowstrings, and much more. so very hard to keep everything clean. And on occassion I have my friends come over and stay before a Traditional Archery shoot, or for movie nights. So the room is what it is.

I already have four Gobo Panels. Now I want to add a few more panels on walls or free standing to help the sound even more. I have some wild ideas( with no acoustic knowledge) But Sometimes wild ideas can pan out. I won't go into them now. The one thing that I think might be helpful...is to buy a area rug 10 by 8 feet for the Den. The Den Floor is Tile. What do you think a good idea to add an area rug for sound improvement besides additional acoustic panels?

As you can see it is an open wall between the Living Room and Den. In the 1994 Northridge Earthquake the fire place came down. I said to myself...I don't need a fire place in Southern California and just took down the rest of the wall.
There are a few empty wall areas...But I can absolutely not move anything. Has to stay the way it is. However..I could put some traps in the corners. Behind the TV? and on the other side by the chairs? The Question is...do I need to with this crazy room set up?

Anyway...lot of crazy ideas that I could do. But let me hear your Ideas. It will be fun to see how your evaluation of panel placement compares to GIK's Ideas.
Lets Play the Acoustic Panel Placement game. The pictures make my area look cleaner and brighter than they are.

Can't wait to hear your Ideas!

This is the long shot of my 27 ft by 19 feet room

To the right is an additional space approximately 9 by 8. With a full size set of Mirrors.

To the left is my Recording area

And right & left Walls of the den

With the Gobos up...but I am going to angle them more...Like the diagram

Just for fun I am adding some of my Guitar Accessory holders that I have built over the years.

My friend built this table and I finished it. On top is my Bridge Pin and string changing station. I use to make Arrowhead Archery racks. Had some left over arrowheads and turned them into useful holders.

Just thinking out loud here, but looking at the shape of the room and ceiling finish I wonder if ceiling mounted panels might be a whole lot more effective?

In my top floor studio space, ceilings are slanted dormer style, and I know thats what I should do. New set of mounting challenges with plaster ceiling! And mistakes are messy and expensive.

I just record solo guitar so if it were me I would just turn the panels so I'm facing the long part of the room and bring the panels around me to make small booth (maybe get a 4th panel) and see how it goes.

I would think maybe to have something (a 5th panel) between my guitar sound and the cabinet with family pictures in it - but I'm just guessing, maybe that doesn't matter at all.

Yes, I have also been thinking about this. After all sound must travel upwards as well.

Hmmm? but the problem is that I might move my recording area a foot, two feet, forward. And that is where the Gobo's offer flexibility. As I have already decided to move them forward and angle them different than from what is shown in the picture.

And who knows, I might change my mind later...and move them a tiny bit more. So....what I really need is a way to attach a lightweight panel to a mic stand..and be able to move them around? I have some strong Atlas Stands...one extra that I could use to position an overhead panel where I want it. Even experiment with it in different positions.

Is there such a way to adapt a panel to a mic stand so it lies parallel to the ground? It would come down to a mounting/adapter harness.

Had several emails back and forth with GIK room specialist this week. Great customer service! And some really affordable products.

Unfortunately even with the most thorough diagrams and pictures, there is always misunderstandings. I thought I had really covered the verbal, pictorial needs, however they thought I would be facing the computer. When in fact I am facing away from the computer. That changes up the scenario completely of course. Will be having a phone meeting tomorrow discuss all of my options.
One of the products they are recommending me is this 244 panel for both ceiling and wall treatment.

5 & 1/4 inch thick. Two panels of 24 x 48 for $193

Recommendations for Ceiling treatment is wise....but will be very difficult for me to install in exactly the right location due to a few factors. Trying to find a logistically solution is not an easy task.

In the meantime I received this video from them. At 3 minutes and 25 seconds they show a before and after for recording acoustic guitar. Quite Dramatic difference.

Thanks, AD. Yes, quite a difference. However, I wouldn’t want to think I’d need a dozen panels to get there. But now that I type that, I have to admit I’m about to make eight 2’x4’x4” panels.

I just listened to another comparison of acoustic guitar in a heavily treated room, and a very lightly treated room. And surprisingly...I may like the room with less treatment.

Each one had is positives and negatives. The Treated room was super even. To the point where I found it less exciting. However, there is a very good chance that the super evenness would help it to stick out in a mix.

The less treated had some notes jumping out...but the harmonics and tone where magnificent and the guitar sound seemed to sound more natural to me. It felt more Omni. Sound coming from all around.

I guess every room is different. But I am pretty sure now, that I don't want a totally dead room for tracking. Somewhere in between might be the answer for me. Although, one never knows until they try with and without. Certainly not as easy to make comparisons, like trying out Mics.
