Default 2003 Circa D-28 Cocobolo & Adirondack Spruce

Trade pending...

For sale is my 2003 Circa D-28 in Cocobolo & Adirondack Spruce. The guitar is in excellent condition.

A few months ago, Randy Hughes of Hughes Guitar & Repair (https://www.hughesguitarsandrepair.com) replaced the bridge due to a hairline crack in the bridge. The new bridge was supplied by John Slobod (who is Circa Guitars). The repair was perfect and made what was already a sweet sounding guitar even richer and fuller in tone. Randy also dressed the frets and did a full setup. The action is perfect, playability is top notch. Comes with an unbranded black hardshell case in good condition. I'll enclose a Fishman Acoustic Matrix Natural II under-saddle pickup which came with the guitar and was removed by Randy Hughes.

John Slobod sent me an e-mail about this guitar...
"At the time, I was building all the Dreads in the 1934 to 1935 style, with small maple bridge plate, forward shifted X, pretty heavily scalloped X. The tops are selected from the stiffest stock in my stash, and I also like to use moderately heavy adi on dreads to keep them focused in the low end. To counter the extra stiff/heavy top wood, I keep the tops relatively thin. My guess is around .115"
I sure had a nice stash of straight grain Cocobolo back then!!!
At that time I was using a thin modified V on the necks. I also used a very light weight single action truss rod. Even though Cocobolo is quite heavy, the guitars tended to feel fairly light.
Top has a 25' rad. Hide glue on all bracing and bridge. Finish is pure nitro lacq. In most cases I did not put any toner on the tops, so the color is 100% natural.
Recently I've been building flatter tops with taller X braces. The guitars are less responsive, but that seems to be what the hard core bluegrass guys want"
The price is $5,000 net to me, includes shipping to the CONUS only. No trade offers, please. If you are within driving range of Franklin, NC, you are welcome to pick up the guitar at my home.

A couple of small pick scratches near pickguard (from previous owner - I only play fingerstyle):

Fine string scratches on the headstock - much easier to see on this photo than in real life:

Are the specs on this beauty the same as Martin's D 28? In particular,
1 11/16 nut?

Hi Frank!

Another soupy foggy southern Appalachian summer morning here in Franklin...

The nut is 1-3/4" and string spacing at the saddle is 2-7/16"

Thanks,

Scott

Scott,

I think most, certainly me, see those specs as a nice upgrade. I've only played a couple of Circa guitars, but man, they were really top shelf.

Frank

Thanks Frank. It's the second best guitar that I've ever played. I'm keeping its sister, the best guitar that I've ever played, a Circa Adirondack & beeswing mahogany D-18.
